Hey guys, first build here so what I experienced might be normal.

I was installing my CPU last night. I have an i7 2600K with the Asus P8P67 1155 Motherboard.

When installing my cpu I lined up the notches in the socket and put it in place. I didn't push down on the cpu or make any adjustments, I just made sure the notches were lined up.

I then lowered the metal retainer clip to lock into place. As I did I noticed a very faint crackling sort of noise. In my paranoid mind it sounded like a thousand tiny gold pins breaking off from the back of my cpu.

I guess my question is, is this normal to hear a sound like this when installing a CPU? I've not tested functionality yet as my graphics card has not arrived (should be here today).

I had an antistatic wrist strap on so I know it wasn't static. I'm think maybe it was the pins locking into the socket?

It's fairly normal for the motherboard to make creaking noises when you are installing a component with any force. It's a PCB with screws through it and things are rarely perfectly aligned.

If you are paranoid about the pins the best thing to do is to just take off the heatsink if you've applied it. It means you may have to clean and reapply thermal paste but it might be worth it for frame of mind.

If the notches in your CPU lined up with the socket (golden triangle in bottom left corner) there should be no problem. The retaining clip uses zero force insertion (the force is applied to the outer edges of the cpu) so I doubt you did any damage if it was lined up correctly.

I installed my i7 2600 and it was my first Intel CPU installation.

When I pushed down on the leaver it made a horrible noise that scared me, and it bent the side of the CPU's heat spreader.

I actually stopped and pulled the lever up to check the pins and they looked fine, then I proceeded to look on the internet to see if it was normal, I saw nothing related so I took a dive and it worked!
