crashing problem

I've crashed diablo twice now, while playing on battle.net, so I'm
running the most recent version. In Act III, normal level, trying to
kill mephesto. I normally play by switching between hot keys quickly, as
well as holding down the alt key (so I can see any dropped items). The
crash seems to happen as soon as I cast a town portal, and I may be
holding down some other hot keys at the same time, as well as the alt
key. The crash completely shuts down diablo 2, and takes me back to
windows desktop.

I've tried to stop holding the alt key, but things just happen so fast
at that point there is no time to think, I'm just hitting keys on
instinct. I'm not hitting any other keys, other than F4, F5, F6, F7,
Alt, and the mouse buttons.

I *think* the crash happens as soon as I hit the right mouse button,
which should cast the town portal, but again, things are happening so
fast I can't really tell for sure.

The question I have is, could I be hitting some odd windows sequence of
key strokes that shuts down the current app? If so, how to I disable
windows secrete key strokes? Or amybe I have to change my hot keys so
some other numbers? F1, F2? But then holding the Alt key is too hard.

I kinda doubt dialbo 2 would have a bug, because thousands would already
know about it, and they would have fixed it.

Maybe I should change the Alt key to some other button?

Anyone have any idea? Please let me know so I can waist more of my free
time on this silly but additive game...

Thanks!

Are you sure you're holding down the alt key and not hitting the windoze
key which is right next to it? That wouldn't crash the game, but it
WOULD take you to your desktop.

You got it, alt-F4 is the culprit - it is a windows shortcut that exits
whatever program / window is in the foreground.
I used to have that same problem with my barb, I had F4 assigned to 'find
item', I was holding the alt key to see the stuff and then would hit F4 to
try to switch to that skill and poof, there went that game and I had to
restart the program.
Whatever skill you have F4 set to, set it to some other key and use F4 for
some skill that is used either less often or definately when alt is not
being used.

Or alternately, his other self-suggestion, switching the alt key to
something else. But that's *definitely* the problem, alt-f4 will
always close Windows programs.

Heh, I always seem to spell that wrong. I should start typing my replies in
Word or something else with a spell check.

You *really* shouldn't get me started, so I'll just hint this time:
Try Agent or Free Agent (www.forteinc.com) ;-)

Actually, I have already tried it/them and really like this one (newsrover)
better, it just fits the way I like to do things better, about the only
thing I would like added to this one is an option to killfile a specific
thread, which, for all I know, they do now, I am still running an older
version, too lazy/cheap to upgrade.
If I wasn't using this I would probably be using Agent - heh, *anything* but
Outlook or Outlook Express eh?

*That* I couldn't agree with more ;-)
