Crazy setup - projecting on ceiling, typing from bed

Hi,

I've been computing at a desk for 10+ years and it made its mark on my spine, with all the ergonomic chairs and stuff. So I'm considering building a really weird setup at home:

- a projector will project on the ceiling above my bed
- from the bed, I'd watch movies, read e-books, even play mouse-only games

Has anyone tried anything like this? It should be really good for your back. What do you guys think?

In particular, what kind of projector would ouput a large enough image at 2 meters/6ft? Where would it be placed (the bed is good for other stuff, not projectors)? If we go a bit further, I imagine one using some sort of vertical keyboard to type, any thoughts on that? And so on...

Some projectors allow you to skew the picture (trapezoid transform) so that the projection appears rectangular on the wall even if the projector isn't angled quite right. So you could mount the projector on your headboard and then use the trapezoidal transform to correct the image.

6 feet should be fine for a projector. You can adjust the zoom and sharpness with the controls.

As for the keyboard, sounds like you may need to build a custom keyboard holder that keeps it at an angle. Or you could get a wireless headset and Dragon Naturally Speaking to dictate rather than type.

Hope you have a good/comfy mattress. If you add up your sleeping time and your computing time, you're talking many hours on the bed. Most people get sore when laying in bed >8-9 hours. As far as the wife/GF getting pregnant....i don't know. Do you really want to be having nookie, while she has the keyboard on your back..chatting on MSN ? 😛

Yeah, don't worry, I won't lie in bed as if I were disabled; I still have a day job and wouldn't try the bed setup there ;-)

As for spending too much time in bed... Doesn't apply. As I said, I have a day job and wouldn't spend more time computing horizontally (hey, I coined a new term: horizontal computing) than you guys would spend on the couch watching TV. And on that couch I suspect you'd adopt a rather twisted position with your spine bent. Worse than laying flat on your back in a bed.

Anyways, there is ergonomics research that shows that reclined posture is better than upright posture.

So I have to do my research on projectors... don't know much about them. Any hands-down best projector for this setup? You know, like a Taiyo Yuden of projectors? With serious trapezoid control and since the projector would live very close to the viewer (headboard or the like), it has to be silent.

How cool it will be to watch movies from the bed and whenever you feel like it, fall asleep right there! Not to mention the chick magnet factor of inviting ladies over for a movie, where your only display happens to be above a bed! :->

Particularly useful in freezing Canada, 1Tanker, you'll be able to watch from under a blanket ;->

Hopefully you dont plan to just stay in bed for long long amounts of time. Staying stationary in a bed for a long time can cause a thrombus to form (a blood clot). They give patients in beds for a while a blood thinner like warfarin so they dont develop clots. Also regardless if you are going to use a keyboard your arms will not be at the anatomical position, you can use a mouse on the side of yourself though ^_~. Have fun with your awsome idea just make sure you walk around a bit and stay safe!

Been there, done that.....Phlebitis...not fun. Broke my leg when i was 25, got a blood-clot. On Warfarin(IV) in hospital for 4 days, then at home on Coumadin for 3 months. Had to go to the hospital every single day for weeks, for a blood test, to make sure my blood wan't too thick or thin. Couldn't shave or drink for the full 3 months. Scary sh!t, kind of.

I don't know enought about projectors to recommend one. I guess it also depends on your budget. I think you're going to be hard pressed to find a silent one, though, since they all use cooling fans. Isn't exactly a huge market for that kind of thing. However, most I've encountered tend to be fairly quiet anyway.

His chances of that are as likely as he would suffer DVT while sitting in a computer chair (aka Not Much). While a valid worry for those with limited movement, worrying about a blot clot on a regular person from lying down too much is unwarranted; he/she will change positions frequently enough to prevent such things.
