You use Home Group for the "domain" if you want to call it yet.
Only 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate can join a domain.

You need a business edition of Windows Server 2008 or similar to use a domain controller. It is possible to do in Home Server but it's not supported by Microsoft and can break things.
