Just bought a used 19" Compaq V90 Monitor. Here's the wierd problem. I get a black desktop when 98SE boots. Under Linux its fine. When I hook up my old 14" Yakumo Monitor to it my system boots to its 800x600 configuration. Don't know what else to do.

Help anyone!!!!

With your old monitor attached change the adapter refresh rate to "Adapter Default" then shutdown. Connect your new monitor and see if it boots. Change to a more appropriate refresh rate.

That's great, but it's strange that an old 14" monitor could be set to a refresh rate or resolution that a modern 19" monitor couldn't handle.

Glad it's working, though!

If you only had one monitor I would have suggested booting with the monitor turned off. Windows 98 will then usually boot with the "default monitor" parameters which would have done the same thing. The only problem is every once in a while Windows refuses to reset to default monitor and then the fix doesn't work.

In that case you boot to Safe Mode, delete the installed monitors from Device Manager, and let Windows redetect the current monitor upon rebooting. This always works.

I had the 19" @ 1152 x 864 'cause 1024 x 768 was like looking @ a wide screen from 2 feet away! What's the average resolution for a 19" anyway?

No idea what the quirk was but when I hooked the 14" up and booted, it went like I said to its normal 800 x 600 configuration.

I then went to cleaning out all the nvidia drivers and reinstalled the V90 software which I downloaded from the Net and voila! My 19" is up and running. Maybe the nvidia drivers had conflicts. I'm just guessing though.

Typically, 1280x1024 is quoted as the "recommended" resolution for 19" monitors. (I prefer 1280 x 960 as this retains the 4:3 aspect ratio where 1280x1064 is 5:4). The recommended resolution varies from model to model. Some models (usually the cheap .27mm and .28mm dot pitch models)have a 1024x764 recommendation.

Just use your own judgement. IMO the highest resolution that looks glassy is best. Above that point it just doesn't look as clear. I'm not saying blurry or anything that bad just not "glassy."

Well right now I have it at 1152 x 864 @85Hz. I've tried the higher resolutions but I ddid't like them. They seemed too small.

Is it also possible that my GPU is limiting the size? I had a GF4 Ti4200 installed but it crapped out on me so I had to return to my old GF2 MX 400.

I'm not sure what you mean by higher resolutions seemed too small.

If you mean the fonts are too small, well I just select large fonts in display manager. Often this doesn't help in games.

I just compromise and use 1280x960 or 1152x864 like you, sometime even lower. Depends on the game.

That's why I'm using that resolution. Basically because of games.
