EA knows their sales numbers will take a hit by moving away from Steam. Or at least it would for any other title. That is why they chose their biggest name recognition title to do this move -- hoping the lure of the name "Crysis" is strong enough to make it worth the hassle. Their choices are to 1) Continue to prop up a competitor, or 2) Go it alone in hopes of getting a foot in the door in the form of their distribution app on your PC.

I thought about buying it on Steam last week but money is tight so I was going to wait for the first sale on it...LOL...now it won't go on sale at all!

If it's on Impulse, I prefer it. FREE DRM is better than Steam DRM. But EA DRM servers are quited a mess, unreliable and will be closed down before Steam/Impulse. It was like this in the past, it will come back in the future.

EA IS APPARENTLY DENYING THIS WAS THEIR FAULT.

This is BS... I remember the good old days when you could buy a game, install it and play it instead of dealing with digital distribution crap, "limited/collector's editions", DLCs and redeem codes... Is it actually still possible to buy a game on a DVD without online activation (so that it has NOTHING to do with Steam/EA Store/etc.) in US/Europe?

Bah, here is to hoping that Battlefield 3 will be available on Steam in some version as well as any DLC (hate DLC as well but that's another story). I probably would get a deluxe version, if so available on Steam, but if its only on "Origin" I won't as I do not need another steam-clone (read: headache) to deal with.

Personally Digital downloads are lame. To have to run steam to play a game is BS. I hate fanboys that don't have a car and need mommy's credit card cause they got an A on their report card. Get a car, go to the store and buy it and be a man or women.

[citation][nom]bygbyron3[/nom]The issue is that Origin like EA Download Manager is absolutely horrible and unreliable software along with Games for Window Live. I have yet to find any distribution even remotely as good as Steam. Keep the ball on Valve's court; a lot of gamers don't want to go to the kiddies’ court with broken rims and no nets.[/citation]
+1
EA Download Manager and Games for Windows Live sucks big time.

Yep, it's a real word, look it up in the dictionary and there's a link to the EA homepage.
This action by EA is idiotic, it's not even good business and is certainly bad for the end user.
What is the effect on multiplayer? Can we only play against people who buy it from that store? If a friend of mine buys it from Origin and I have already from Steam will that mean we cannot play against each other?
Will the cost from Origin be higher or lower than Steam? If it is lower then EA will be taking a higher financial hit to subsidise, if it is higher then they will take a financial hit through lower sales.

This whole move smacks of being petty to prove a point, using the Crysis name to grab headlines and free advertising for Origin. Expect to see Crysis 2 back on Steam within a month.

[citation][nom]eightdrunkengods[/nom]Is it still possible to register Crysis 2 as a non-steam game?[/citation]
Yup! Adding a non-Steam game is always possible. You can add anything you want as a non-Steam game. 😀

You won't get the benefit of updates and Steamworks, but you can use the in-game overlay and community features still. I play Blizzard titles through Steam actually. :)

This is the best decision they have ever made. Take that horrid excuse for a game out of Steam please.

EA states it wasn't their fault. I call BS. STeam just unleashed a bunch of F2P MMOs and there are tons of indie devs who sell exclusivley on Steam.

I think EA is going to try and push Origin on people. Sad thing is that last time EA tried to outdo Steam on digital distribution, they failed horribly and went to Steam.

Same will happen again.

"Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more."

Change the title of the article as it was not even accurate before the edit. It's not exclusive to Origin if you say its available on direct2drive and others.

Many commenters seem to fail to realize that there is a big possible financial gain for EA by opening their own service. Valve gets a % of the sales with each purchase on Steam. Even if that % is extremely tiny when your considering large amount of sales it becomes a sizable amount of money even from a single game title.

There is nothing stopping any publisher or even independent developers from making their own and keeping a larger part of the profits. It only makes sense in the end to do it on their side of the fence. Sure for the consumers it is not a positive thing having to get separate programs for many of their games but be honest if it was the only way to get and play those games chances are you will go along with it anyways.

Also let us not forget that Valve is a game developer as well, and a damn popular one at that for good reason. They are competition does it sound like a good practice to help fund the competition? Remember when Steam was new and only had Valve titles? Valve themselves did was EA is planning to do, notice how everyone of their games is Steam required now?
Notice how other services like D2D don't even sell Valve games?

So why shouldn't EA or any other publisher/developer do what Valve has done? It's smart and profitable.

Ok Stop buying Anything from EA.
No Mass Effect 3, No BF3. Nothing

Anyone who doesnt follow will just let EA continue doing this.

Terrible idea by EA, have fun trying to compete against Steam. Oh and battlecarrysabot it said that a special edition of Battlefield 3 will be exclusively on horogin so hopefully that means steam will still have the normal edition.

[citation][nom]roguekitsune[/nom]Considering EA already treats me like a pirate and a baby killer when i purchase their games. I have a copy of mirror's edge and need for speed that i can't install anymore because i have used up my allotted number of installs(I reformat my computer at least once a year) and they basically refuse to authorize more installs. So the idea of using their download manager/store is not appealing at all.[/citation]

Um that's why you run the EA Game Deauthorization tool before reformatting, it gives you your slot(s) back. Mirror's Edge is included. http://activate.ea.com/deauthorize/

Next time use google.
