What power supply, cooler and case have you got?

5800X3D be on the cards along with Deepcool ak620 if current cooler is inadequate. Or Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE if case can accommodate.

What's your current ram? Looks like 2133 (1066*2) but thats probably because XMP isn't enabled in bios. If ram doesn't have XMP profile for 2933 or thereabouts then a kit of ram of this speed will bump up performance quite a bit, even so with your current cpu. Check with Cpuz in SPD tab for memory info. Around 3000~3200MHz XMP is nice speed for Ryzen if you buy new ram, Gskill 3200 CL 16 for example. But check Cpuz first and enable XMP in bios if you can.

To be Honest I don't know the make or brand of the case,
The Powersupply is a Rosewill Photon 750 Full Modular but I just received my new
**Aresgame Black Cube 1000W Gold Modular power supply. **
Again not sure the make or brand of the cooler but it's a large verticle heatsink with a fan??? I'll add a pic of the case and cooler.

I also looked at the CPUZ SPD page and it shows XMP 2.0 running. Gonna swap to XMP profile 1 and see if there is any change.

Hmm this is a bit of a mess. Different ram modules isn't helping things with XMP, i doubt you'll get it working. There's a 3600 stick mixed with 3000. Need to sort out your ram and just keep to two identical modules.

Now your new psu, return it asap as it is Tier F. Your older Tier B psu is better.

If you want to buy a new psu done right, consult the list. Corsair Rmx series is solid. 850w is enough. 10yr warranty. Don't buy anything with less than 7yrs from a trusted brand from Tier A or B.

Hmm. Could be first release 5xx board where bios updates didn't eliminate 1st gen Ryzen, or not completely, I thought only Athlon processors were affected because of small bios capacity. Or maybe it's just marketing now, like why advertise 1st gen kind of thinking.

I bought an early X570 board which was before 550's and it only supports Ryzen 3xxx and 5xxx with an exception for one older CPU that is the R7 PRO 2700X

Their diagnostics suggests they have a 550 so don't know what to make of this. You're probably right though and bit of copy paste from elsewhere may be possible.

First thing, edit your post to simplify the parts you now have.

A most important question is WHY do you think you need to upgrade?
In what way is your current pc not doing the job?
Or, do you just have the itch to change?

Do you have a budget?

Budget is important.

As far as the Corsair power supply I have one of those 850 watt units and am very happy with it.

The above poster is correct if you want the best gaming cpu on am4, grab the 5800x3d hands down. However if you are on a bit of a budget, the 5700x is a good pick under 200 bucks and will curb stomp the 1700x you have now. Even a 5600/5600x would be a nice improvement in games.

As far as aresgame power supplies I’ve heard of but they seem to generic/no name. Replace with a better unit.

I concur pick up a new ram kit. A 32gb kit of ddr4 3200 should set you back 50-60 bucks.

As far as the gpu, you’ve got the 5700xt? From what I’ve seen those are pretty close to an rx 6600 xt/rtx 3060 12gb. In my opinion for a good upgrade there you need to be talking about at least an rx 6800/6800xt or higher or nvidia side maybe look at the 4070 or better. But you’ll likely find with the faster cpu that your 5700xt wakes up a bit.

Done, hope that simplifies it enough.
I started having problems with my video card, i.e. while playing COD MW3 video crashed several times, lowered the graphics settings crashed again, also had some issues with Star Citizen with jittering, etc.

and of course, there's always that itch to improve lol.

Budget isn't an issue, but with that in mind, I know full well that the latest and greatest isn't always the best and the most expensive item is rarely the best out there. Hence the reason I come to the forums is to get an idea of what is really the best bang for the buck.

Ok I'm looking at

AMD - AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X3D 8-core, 16-Thread
or thinking I should just jump to
AMD - Ryzen 9 5950X 4th Gen 16-core, 32-thread

Is there some reason to go with the 7 instead of the 9?

2 x G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6000 (2 x 16GB) for a total of 64 GB

CORSAIR - RMx Series RM1000x 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

XFX - Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX 24GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 Gaming Graphics Card

The 5800x3d is better for just a gaming pc. The extra cores of a 5950x aren’t needed unless you are doing a lot of multitasking and or content creation.

7900xtx is closer to an rtx 4080 for performance than to the 4070ti. So it’s the better card I think. The other thing to consider is the 4070ti only has 12gb of vram which seems ok now but as games get more complex and even more textures you may find you have to turn settings down on the 12gb card sooner than on the amd card.

I can say a friend of mine went from an rtx 3090 to a 7900xtx and loves it.

Gotcha, I do use Unreal Engine quite a bit as well as gaming which is why I was thinking the 5950.

Also is there any reason I would / should upgrade the motherboard or will my current board support the Ryzen 9 and the DDR5 Ram?

Socket am4 is going to be limited to ddr4 only. You may want to look at benchmarks the 5800x3d. For gaming it’s supposed to be a great cpu. You can go to Intel but then you are looking at a full motherboard upgrade, cpu, ram if you decide to go ddr5. Same story as the am5 socket.

AM5 and Intel I think are faster with productivity than am4, but the extra cache on the x3d really helps games. So in that specific area it can about keep up with newer stuff. Unfortunately you are at the end of life of the am4 socket where you basically can get a good upgrade now, or invest in a new platform and spend a little more but maybe not get a lot more performance.

Let me ask, do you have a microcenter near you? If so it might be worth a trip. For example if you are willing to look at Intel they’ve got a combo of an i9 12900k, z790 board and 32gb ddr5 for 399.99. At least that’s what my local one is advertising.

Of course they have newer ones but that seems like a good value. They also have the new ryzen 9 7900x, b650 board which unfortunately is a mid range board, and 64 gb of ddr5, but you are talking 599.99.

Gives an idea anyway. Personally I’ve always built amd systems but this year I went with an i5 12600k, z690 board, and so far I’m pretty happy with it.

God I wish I did but the nearest microcenter is over 4 hours away in Houston.

I've always been an AMD guy myself as well. I figured I'd be looking at a Mobo upgrade with the DDR 5 but was just wondering if people thought the DDR5 was worth the upgrade right now.
