I recently did a custom build and since i got it up and running, i have been experiencing crashes frequenty while running certain programs. my first thought was an incorrect driver. Here is my custom build information.

cpu: AMD FX-9590 Vishera 8-Core 4.7GHz Socket AM3+ 220W Desktop Processor
mobo: ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ AMD 990FX + SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way
memory (x2): G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9S-8GBXL
gpu: Asus R9 280x
ssd (with os): SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
hd: WD black caviar 7200rpm 1TB (for files and larger games installed)
cpu heatsink: Phanteks PH-TC12DX_RD Dual 120mm PWM CPU Cooler
PSU: LEPA MaxBron B1000-MB 1000W ATX CrossFire 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

It has never crashed while i use smaller programs but when i use programs like battlefield 4, titanfall, ableton live 9, photoshop, and even watching movies on chrome. 99 percent of the time the computer just freezes completely making me put it into force shutdown. Other times it will just crash and give me a blue screens such as:

- IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
- DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
- DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER
- SYSTEM_THRED_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (atikmdag.sys)

Im not sure what to do next. dont know how to get to the crash reports as well. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check temps, Keep the CPU under 60C, and Keep the GPU under 95C Preferably keep it under 80C for best results. If your temps are fine, uninstall and reinstall your video card drivers and see if it still BSOD's.

If it still does, Run Intel Burn Test to stress the CPU and see if it blue screens, that would normally mean the CPU is not stable and needs more volts or the board may not be giving the CPU enough volts when turbo kicks in. If it still get BSOD's, My next step would be to test the ram, Take a stick out at a time and boot the system and try to play a game you normally crash in and see if it BSOD's, I seen RAM do all sorts of weird things.

Hope this helps.

alright i have an amd cpu first off. and second how can i reinstall the video card driver if i have no onboard video on my mobo. how would i be able to start it up with no video card driver. and just a note. i monitor when i play games and it never goes over 70 deg c even when i have the graphics set high. for graphic intensive games. when is idle it sits around 40 deg c. and the weird part is it doesn't even freeze when its in a stress situation. most of the time it freezes in between games when the maps are loading and stuff. plus it haooens a lot when im watching movies online too. that shouldnt be stressing a comp. especially when its just chrome open.

If your using onboard video to see if your R9 card is the problem, You still have drivers for onboard video chipsets, and that could be the issue. Open Control Panel, Click on "Uninstall a program" and uninstall anything that has to deal with AMD, usally would say Catalyst Control Center.

Also Im miss understanding where your getting 70C at, is that on your Video card or CPU?

I run AMD FX8320 5ghz, 90% of AMD Desktop Processors you will have to keep them below 60C, Any higher you could have a problem.

my motherboard doesnt have onbaord video. thats why it has the qr code on the mobo. my average idle temps for my cpu is anywhere from 10-20 deg c (around 65 at max) and my gpu temp idol is around 35 and never goes over 70 even while playing the most graphic intensive games out on full settings. so heat isnt an issue. even though everyone is trying to tell me it is. i put some good stress on the video card and it hold up fine. i have never used more than 50 percent of my cpu. so it just doesnt make sense why my computer keeps crashing. for a while i thought it was drivers but they are all up to date.

today i found that my motherboard only allows 140watt cpus, and my cpu maxes out at 220 so i thought maybe it as it needed more power my mobo forces a shutdown which makes sense since it crashes in cpu and graphic intensive programs but i always monitor it and it never seems like im ever stressing it bad enough for a crash. like my cpu crashes when its still only 5% used and running at 15 deg c. So i called the company today both newegg where i got it and asus and all they tell me is that its compatible and it crashes often due to heat... YET it shows no sign of over heating. so no one can still answer my question about why my mobo says it can only accept 140 watt cpu yet it is still compatible with a cpu that maxes out at 220... seems so fishy to me.

65C is bit hot and some boards will cause throttling and sometimes a result of a BSOD.

So we kinda figured out the temps and they seem alright. That board will handle that 220TDP CPU just fine, ppl regularly get 4.8 - 5ghz on that board Driving the TDP close to 280watts. Mine is at 254TDP on a board thats lesser of what you have.

This is what I would do next, Take your sticks of RAM out of the system and Run 1 stick at a time and see if it will BSOD, If it does BSOD on 1 stick, take it out and try another, you could even try moving the ram to another slot. Chances of both sticks of ram being bad is rare, also you could run a mem test but that will take some time to complete as you will need to do a long test and not no 10min test.

Also the 140Watt your seeing is what most boards warranty the board at, Usually they can handle more then that with ease or they would not make a CPU capable of a 220TDP. I can't say for sure why because im not the person who made the rating for the socket and I really never bothered to look it up as most boards I bought or delt with I look at the Power Phases of the board to get an idea. My board says 140watt as well, but its doing just fine at 5ghz.

As mentioned above by others and me, check the ram. Ram is the number 1 cause of a BSOD when everything is at stock clocks.

did a memtest and nothin wrong. took em each one at a time out tried different slots, and still crashed.

i got the most up to date one a little over a month ago when i built it. and when i check it in device manager it says its up to date. im not sure how to look up the actual version i have on my mobo tho. and its funny you say that and if it is a defective mobo then ill be pissed because this is the 3rd one newegg has sent to me. the first two i received were dead on arrival. like i said i have been using this one for a little over a month now and just experience these weird freezes with no signs of anything wrong. what i want to try to do is check my logs bec i figured out how to access it with eventvwr.msc , but i dont know how to debug and read it. what i understand is that i should be looking at system logs and looking for all the critical errors are and warning and such. but not sure how to actually read, understand them and diagnos my problem. if someone can read those logs can i upload them here and have someone understand exactly whats happening?

You can post them up, Sometimes them event logs helps, sometimes they don't. You can usually tell if you have and unstable Video card or CPU with Random Kernel errors and says something about a core # has failed and successfully recovered, or something along them lines,

Your always gonna have Errors in the Event log, even a perfectly stable system, so don't get to freaked out over it as most of them errors are usually nothing.
