Custom psu cable lengths?

I am relatively new to the pc modding community (if you can even consider what I've done so far as modding) and am always looking for more cool projects to try out. So far I've mostly been limited to mostly cable sleeving as I acquire tools for bigger projects.

Anyways, I currently have my sights set on making custom length psu cables. I've been trying to find out more information but I'd love to put all my questions here and get as many answers as I can find.

For the record, the reason I need these shorter cables is because I am doing a mini itx build for a friend in a core v1 case and only realistically need 6-10 inches for my 24 pin connector and don't like the excess cable down there. I currently have a EVGA superNOVA 550 GS power supply.

So, what size wire do I use? Is 18 gauge correct? Are there different types and do they matter, is making sure they are plugged into the correct positions in the terminal housing all that matters?

What tools will I need? Obviously the wire, 48 male connectors, and a wire crimping tool. Anything else?

Any other useful information out there or useful tips?

You'd be best served by disassembly of the psu side connectors. The Evga's use a proprietary wire that uses in line resistors by the component side connector, so using straight wire will change the performance of the psu.

So just use the stock wires and shorten them, adding the new pins on the beginning of the wire. So all you'll need is the pins and a crimper tool and a pin removal tool.
