Any thoughts on why my D: vaporized? How can I tell if it's hardware or
software related? About a month ago it would display under "My Computer" but
when I inserted a disk I would get "D: is not accessible" and it would vanish
from "My Computer"--I couldn't even get the drawer to open...I had to restart
to retrive the disk. I went into the belly of the beast and disconnected the
IDE cable and reconnected it but still no D: Any suggestions? I hate to run
out and buy a new one if it's software related. P.S. It is a CD-R/RW drive
and it is "lighting up" when I turn the pc on, but that's it.

Thats the tell-tale sign of a dead optical drive.
