If you need backlighting to type at night you are a scrub and do not need a mechanical keyboard to begin with.

I've found backlighting to be good only for gaming as for some of us the left had is displaced with the RMI fingers over the WAD cluster so it's easy for your fingers to get 'lost' if you lift your hand off the keys. This is another reason I like the 710+. You can vary the backlighting of the WAD cluster independent of the other keys. This makes it easy to get your offset fingers back on the WAD using your peripheral vision when necessary.
