What frequency is your CPU set to? If 166, it likely the BIOS has the RAM
in sync.

PC3200 is rated for a max bus speed of 200MHz (DDR400). The MB/bios
controls what the bus speed is initially set to. Most MB's use BySPD as
default. That means it reads the timing data provoded by the ram to set
the default speed. Most (maybe all) ram sets this to lower than max
settings for compatabilty purposes. I don't think any set this higher than
166Mhz, even if it's rated a lot faster. My PC3700 also defaults to 166MHz
using BySpd. Most incompatabilty problems arise because of the other
timings provided BySPD and the MB's bios misinterpreting them and setting
them wrong. During your bios setup, it's your responsibility to set the
timings manually, or just leave them alone if it's working ok. If you have
a system that won't boot from a default bios because of ram
incompatabilities then you have 2 choices, change MB's, or change ram. But
the problem is actually in the MB bios. Once the MB manufacturere fixes it
(if they ever do) then the problem will disappear.

Hard drives should have a steady noise/hum/whine or whatever you want to
call it just like a fan when idle. With access head movement should be
like little clicks and could be erratic on a fagmneted drive. The sound of
a food mixer depends on what's in it you're mixing/chopping/whatever so I
can't make a comparision.

im affraid the mixing sound isnt like making a sponge cake , its more like
taking the nuts feom a car engine, putting them into a metal tin , then
trying to blend them with a mixer .
at first i thought my old powersuply was under powered so i added a new 550
w suply , but with no benefir to the noise, it does seem quieter when not
searching , but when the heads search, thats when the noise appears

Can't tell for certain but it sure sounds like bad bearings. Have a friend
liston to it to another opinion, or take it to a shop and get their
opinion.
