DDR266 / PC133

I own a Celeron 1.7 with a ASUS Geforce 4 Ti4200, and the highest score i can get in 3D Mark 2001 SE is 5097. How come other Celeron 1.7 Systems score 6000+ with only a GeForce 3? I have a Shuttle MV42-N with a Via P4M266 chipset, and am using a stick of 256MB PC133 Ram - Would this be my problem? I am looking at buying a stick of 256MB DDR266, what are the advantages of buying Tiny BGA Ram? and what are the advantages of buying more expensive ram like corsair instead of generic ram?

DDR266 is about 30-40% faster than PC133 under best condition. There may be some other bottle-neck in your system since using PC133, the benchmark shouldn't be so much difference from GeForce3. But you should also look at others system configuration before you draw a conclusion. The Corsair RAM offers better stability, overclockability and compatibility (esp. XMS3200). Some generic RAM is very unstable and even causing system halt.

You have a Celeron mixed with SDRAM, the worst mixture possible. I think also that chipset is one of the illegal VIA ones with crappy performance, Infact your GF4 is about the only good thing in your system - I beat it with my p3 750!
 
If i were to buy a Stick of DDR266, would the graphics performance of my computer improve slightly? I will be replacing the Celeron with a Pentium 4 2ghz or better... One of the reviews here i was reading had a Celeron 1.3 with a GeForce 3, and it even got 6000+, and it had SD RAM, why faster? The Ram i am using was out of my last computer... VIA P4M266 / P4X266 is the illegal version or was...

Would it be cheaper to buy an AMD Motherboard and CPU? the P4 2 GHZ CPU Is currently $340 is Australia, that seems to be the best price i can find. One thing with the Athlon - how much cooling do they need - my friend has a Athlon 1.4c (XP1600) and he has to use a Desk Fan to cool it, are the newer athlons any better or what? i dont mind buying extra cooling.

The Celeron 1.3 is based on a different architecture that doesn't need the memory bandwidth the Celeron 1.7 does.

UGH. YUK. SDRAM and the P4 celleron.
DEFINATELY upgrade the ram.

TBGA ram is smaller and more compact, so can be advantageous in a small and compact case. Apart from that its the same as normal ram.

You really only need expensive ram like corsair if you plan on overclocking.
PC2100 is the limit to what your board can take (+/- overclocking).

Allthough i reccomend against buying complete no-name brand generic ram. Get crucial, micron, kingston, winbond or kingmax.

Additionally, if you are a serious gamer i would strongly advise you also consider the following.

A. Get 512Mb instead of 256Mb. Far too often you will run out of physical memory, especially in win2k or XP. 512 keeps the swap file usage to a minimum and games smooth.

B. Replace that Celleron with a P4 1.8A or similar. The 128k cache on the celleron really hinders performance, especially in things like GAMES.

Although my P4 Celeron 1.7 is slowish with 256mb PC133, the last computer i had was a PC Chips M748MR with the SiS620 Chipset - that is what i call slow, i bought the ram for that, and it dies a few months later, so instead of wasting the ram, i used it in my new system.

I will be buying a stick of 256 / 512 mb of DDR 266 or maybe 333 for overclocking,depending if i replace the Celeron. Ill also be buying a 2 ghz or 2.4 ghz P4 CPU.

Something strange with my motherboard - i have a jumper setting for CPU Frequency, 2 options - 100mhz or 133mhz, but in the manual for the motherboard it says it only supports 400mhz FSB, and on Via's specs page for the P4M266 / P4X266 Chipset, it says it supports only 400mhz, would it be possible to use a cpu with 533mhz FSB by setting the jumper? I tried it on my celeron but nothing showed up meaning the jumper is live and working.

Is there anyone out that owns a Via P4M266 baised motherboard who knows anything about this?

100FSB <b>IS</b> 400.

The ACTUAL Mhz is 100... but it transfers 4 packets of data per cycle, so its got an EFFECTIVE FSB of 400.

Same with 133 & 533.


I doubt that your particular mobo supports 133FSB, so your stuck with 100, or whatever you can ramp it up too. Hopeflly you can lock the PCI/AGP speeds.

If you get a DDR266, yeah, your performance will be improve slightly and slightly only. The price of DDR333 and DDR266 is only a little difference in price at Melbourne so get a DDR333 instead. But if you are planning to get Granite Bay mobo then is another story which you SHOULD get DDR266. Now buying P4 processor below 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB is cheaper than Athlon below 2400+ XP but a good AMD mobo is somehow cheaper then a decent Intel mobo. For cooling you can get a Thermaltake Volcano 9 same price as Volcano 7+ if I remember correctly. It can uptake to beyond 2200+ XP without problem.
