ddr3 and ddr2 supporting & not supporting motherboard. mo

I have a hp p6507c (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02163269). It has 4gb for ddr2 800mhz in it at the moment. It's motherboard is patron M2N68-LA (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01925534). On the motherboard website it states that it supports ddr3 1066 & 1333mhz. I purchased a stick of 8gb pc3 10600R witch should work according to the website. I know that the memory in it is ddr2 and I bought ddr3 but the website states it should work. So when I was trying to install the ram the notch wouldn't go in indicating that the ram slot only supports ddr2. Can someone please explain to me what happened.

Your motherboard is the Narra5 version, the one you linked is Narra6.

You should follow the PC manufacturer's specifications.
The motherboard manufacturer could make the same motherboard with DDR2 and DDR3 slots.
The motherboard from HP comes with only DDR2 slots as per your PC manual.
