So I have had this 22 inch Gateway LCD monitor for a little over 3 years now and then randomly tonight the entire screen goes black without any type of error message or warning. The computer itself remains running fine and I'm in a skype call which continues as normal me talking and hearing everything fine. I just obviously can't see anything but a totally black screen. The monitor itself remains on and the power light is lit up just nothing is showing up. I try turning off and on the monitor still nothing shows up.
I then decide to try restarting the computer and see if that fixes the problem, no luck. I figure it may be a problem with my GPU or maybe even a crapped out VGA cable so I switch out the cable and try using the monitor on my girlfriends computer which we know has a working GPU. Still nothing shows up on the screen yet the screen powers on fine.
I decide to look into it a bit online and come across a thread talking about using a flashlight to see if anything shows up on the darkened monitor. Sure enough I grab a small flashlight and it turns out under the light everything is visible, I can see my desktop, etc. all like normal. Just obviously the screen it's self is very darkened and still near impossible to see.
I'm guessing this has to do with the lightning source or the the LCD technology that I know very little about. Is it worth fixing or is it even all that fixable? I'm kinda surprised this happened only after 3 years considering I've had numerous old monitors last 5+ years and still going today.
Should I just invest in a new monitor and if so any ideas or types on which to get? I'm thinking about an LED or something. I mostly game on my desktop and I'd like to get another 22 inch as I find that size is perfect for me. Any information is much appreciated,
Thanks!
