I think it is wise for Dell to release such a 30Hz UHD monitor. The reason is simple, DisplayPort is not mature enough for 4K 60Hz. By the end of this year, DP 1.3 will improve 4K a lot. However, what I care about is how much difference does this monitor have when I stare at it for a long time.

The problem (as I understand it) is two fold:
1) yes, HDMI and DP both have big issues displaying 4K above 30fps due to the sheer bandwidth requirements. Both standards have new revisions which have been ratified and will allow for 60fps transfer but they are may take a little time to reach the market because....

2) the controller chips for the panels are not fast enough to keep up with 60fps 4K. This is why most TVs show up as being tiled displays because they need 2 separate controllers simply to push out 30fps 4K properly. We are just starting to see controller chips capable of 30fps 4K support, and it is going to take a while before we see tiled 4K 60Hz chips available in anything other than ridiculously expensive professional products.

How many people have a GPU capable of 4K gaming in the first place? And if they do then they would be much better served with a higher end display anyways rather than cheaping out on a panel like this. That is what the big $2000+ monitors are for.

This display will do 60fps 1080p up-scaled to 4K just fine, which will still look mighty impressive. And when you are doing something like desktop work or watching a 4K video then you get native resolution and clarity out of it. This is really not that much of a compromise today. You get all of the performance that 99% of gaming rigs can handle for both 2D and 3D, but you can pay well under $1000 for it. Sure, in a few years we will see 4K 60Hz drop in price, but if you want something realistically performant and affordable then this is probably the best option on the market.

Everyone here seems to agree that this monitor is a 4k but this is not a 4k monitor but a 3k monitor ..resolution of a 4k would be 4x(1280x720) =5120x2880. Where as 3k is simply 3x(1280x720)=3840x2160. So i think its better to wait before jumping on this opportunity.anyway only those who got a good desktop with a very good graphic card will benefit from this monitor. I dont think there are some windows laptop out there that can output 3k .most of them does not have a display port or mdp.atm only laptop that can output this "4k" could be the new macbook pro haswell but so far ive not seen anyone trying it .

It's 4k because it's got 4 times the amount of pixels as a 1920x1080 image, which has a bit over 2 million. While it's twice the resolution, it's marketing the pixel increase (it's over 8 million pixels)
