Does anyone know what the max CPU is for a Dell Dimension 2300 tower? Currently running a Celeron 1800/256/400.
I wanted to go with a P4 2.8GHz/512/400, not sure if the board will support. This thing is bone stock currently.
Thanks
Shane

I would suggest you upgrade when you can replace your Mother Board, CPU and Ram. In other words built a new computer. Your 478 socket is more or less obsolete and even putting in a new processor wouldn't do you that much good.

On the other hand if you are getting this new CPU for free, go for it. You may want to check with Dell first to see if your current Bios will support the new Cpu or they have an updated Bios before you make the change though.

Thanks
BIOS is A02 (latest and greatest).
This machine is my daughter's, she uses it for surfing/email/club penguin etc...
Just want to play around with it to see what it is capable of.
It has a 160gb HD and 1GB of PC-133 memory now (maxed out).
Want to replace the crappy Celeron with a P4 2.8/512/400fsb if possible.
Not looking to make a gaming machine or buy a $1200 powerhouse at the moment.
Need to know if the BIOS will support the cpu I want to put in it.

Starmicro has several 400 fsb socket 478 cpus; I would recommend the 2.2 for $11 plus shipping. If it doesn't work, you're only out about $17. But I also recommend a new motherboard, cpu, and memory. Fry's has a celeron 430 with board for only $59.99 (may include heatsink, depends on fry's location). Ddr2 starts at about $20 per gig; 2x2gb kits go for $20-40 after rebate. Check your case to see if the board is micro atx with a removable backplate; if the backplate is fixed to the board or with rounded corners, time for a new system. You may also upgrade the memory to 2 512 sticks of pc133, but it probably costs alot more than ddr2. I found my complete compaq pc for $199 last may at Fry's anniversary sale.
