DELL dimension 8400

bought a barebobe dimension 8400 w/o CPU and need to replace the CPU. I found out that I need to know several info b-4 i can buy a new one.
1. What is the proper CPU voltage requirement , I noticed while browsing that it has a range of 1.28 to 1.4 and some
2. Do I need a 64 bit support?

other relevant advise would be appreciated thanks a miliion.

Who told you that you need the voltage info?

All you need to know is what socket it is. From what I can tell, it's either Socket 478 or LGA775. It's probably the latter.

Just look at the CPU socket and it'll tell you. Also, it looks like it can handle up to 3.6Ghz.

Once you determine the socket type, go on to www.pricewatch.com and do a search for "3.6Ghz LGA775" or "3.6Ghz socket 478" or something to that effect. Here's one:

As far as needing 64 bit support, all LGA775 P4 processors support EMT64 (64bit support). So don't worry about that either.

I thought only the 6xx Intel's support EMT64.

EDIT: and maybe the 8xx's also.

Dont quote me on this but, I believe that only the 8xx series changed the pin out (meaning new board). If your dell ran a 5xx series it should take a 6xx series. Also its kinda pointless to go from a 5xx to a 6xx of the same speed unless you really NEED the EMT64.

The 8xx Smithfields require motherboards that are dual core capable, specifically the i945, the i955 and the i975. If the motherboard in that computer is an i915 or i925 then it will only run 3xx, 5xx, and 6xx processors. Theoretically processor speeds up to 3.8GHz should be supported, although a BIOS update may be needed for the 3.8GHz models if the motherboard is old.

In regards to ge104042's second question, you don't need 64-bit support as the motherboard will support older 5x0 processors. However, all current Intel processors have 64-bit support built in at no extra cost so you might as well look for one that does. It won't be activated unless you have a 64-bit OS, but it's still nice to have. Processors that support EMT64 are the 5x1 Prescotts, the 6x0 Prescott 2Ms, the 6x2 Prescott 2Ms with VT support, the 8x0 dual core Smithfields, and the 3x1 or 3x6 Celeron Ds.

Thanks for the outpouring of tech support, Needless to say I ordered the one with the 64 bit, as since there was really not that much price difference. I'll update you all when I get the parts and put them together. Oh by the way I must tell you all that I am putting a Xentera Quad video card in place of the defaulted PCI e card on it. We will see....

Just a FYI, all prescott chips operate at variable voltage, ususally in the 1.28 to 1.4 range. I'm not sure if this is an energy saving device, or a voltage drawdown, or perhaps a bit of bothe.

btw intel 5x1 supports 64bit as well
