[citation][nom]wildwell[/nom]Does anybody know who makes the batteries for Dell?[/citation]

I suppose the same people who makes the igrenade erm.. I mean iPod batteries.

ummm.. not that im not convinced but why was the laptop sitting in the middle of the room exactly?? odd place to put your laptop. and how quickly can u be ready to take pictures?

1} Hi, last night I unplugged my laptop from its charger,
Do you always leave your laptop plugged into the charger....forever???

2} carried it downstairs,
Uh, you suddenly thought your laptop was afraid of being upstairs???

3) and placed it on the wood floor of my living room.
You just like to place the laptop in the middle of the floor occasionally???

4) I heard a loud popping sound and the room immediately filled with smoke while the laptop hissed and sizzled. It died down, I pushed it with my foot, and it stared hissing again. There is a large scorch mark on my floor.
If it had started popping and smoking, why did you leave it the house??? Logically, most people would remove it from the house! If it is emitting smoke, why did you take the time to take a picture???

5) It goes without saying, I am glad the laptop was not on my couch ...or in an airplane.
It goes without saying, that if was burning and smoking, it would be incredibly stupid of you to put it on your couch! If you're in an airplane, the flight attendant would have smacked you for using it in flight and besides you would have it plugged in anywhere so it wouldn't have overheated in the first place!!

i dont understand something............
WHAT THE HELLWAS YOUR DELL DOING ON THE DAMN FLOOR ????
and moreover in the center of a half empty room ????

this really looks like a purposely committed situation

and then again, what was the point of all this fiasco?
changing the mind of potential dell customers
and therefore reducing dell's income
...and perhaps provoking employees firings?

this is plain RIDICULOUS.

1) Lots of people unplug their laptops, its a real pain in the ass when you have to drag it around with you, thats why laptops have batteries.

2) She carried it downstairs. Well I have typed away on sites whilst watching TV before now, and maybe her TV is downstairs?

3) Placed it on the wood floor. Good idea to stuff fibres getting it the airvents, aren't we advised to do this anyway? Maybe she was lying on the floor, i've seen it done, it's not so far fetched.

4) It hissed and popped, yes, she poked it with her foot and didn't throw it out the window, also she took a picture for the same reason people keep disposable cameras in their glove box to aid insurance claims.

5) Good thing it wasn't on the couch, well I can assume it wasn't burning before she placed it on the floor. If she had placed it on the couch and then it had set on fire the house could have burned down.

And we all know that the first thing you do when you unplug your Netbook is to take it downstairs and put it in the middle of the FLOOR! It would have been more believable on a desk or table. Sounds like someone was monkeying with their lithium battery.

an atom-based netbook is the last thing i'd expect to heat up that bad.
i guess i should not regularly leave my p4 burner on for days unattended.

This doesn't smell right at all. First, why place the laptop on the floor? Also, the smoke looks like it was added after the fact to the image. Lastly, why are there no photos of the bottom of the Dell laptop? If it burned her floor as badly as the image shows then the bottom of the laptop would be burned through and I would expect to see melted plastic affixed to burn area on the floor.

the battery was probably the battery properly had a defect that only got worst over the years until it exploded.

another cause for a battery fire is if the power connector area of the battery or laptop become corroded; the contact area becomes small or resistance goes up and the connector heats up which in tern heats up the battery, and all it takes is for a tiny spot of the battery to become too hot for the entire battery to explode

there hundreds of things that can go wrong and it needs to be properly investigated to see whose fault it is.

At college, I have helped some students with some of their laptop problems and I have seen things such as some keeping the battery removed when the laptop is off and and in that same bag, you would see snacks and crumbs and other crap and it will cause gunk to build up on the battery terminals and they will just connect it to the laptop with out cleaning it, and the connectors will be corroded

some people don't really take good care of their electronics

Well how bout this one: You remember the Nvidia onboard GPU for laptops that were manufactured with a die problem that caused them all to reach 100c+? Affected HP and Dell? I have one of those HP's. Not only did it mechanically fail twice out of the box on the same day, the end of the power cord that plugs into the laptop ended up somehow losing enough tensile strength that the ground and 12v wiring got to touch each other, melt the plastic at the breach, and start sparking like it was the 4th of july. Got any spare lighter or correctional fluid laying around? Did grandma forget to turn off her gas stove?

Seriously, to these companies: YOU HAVE ENGINEERS WITH MASTERS AND DOCTORATES. WHERE'D THEY GET THEM FROM, THE CRACKERJACK BOX?

@Razor512: Some companies don't really make good electronics. People have made equipment for the military, and alot of our stuff has come from the military - WHERES THE DAMN EQUIPMENT THAT DOESNT FAIL AFTER THE WARRANTY IS UP? THE MILITARY BOUGHT IT ALL?

I can imagine, to our own grandkids - they don't make em like they used to anymore. I remember back in the day when they made compaq's quieter than your fancy hybrid hoverboards, and keyboards you could spill corrosive acid over and still use without a problem. Now adays it's all about metahardware. (on that thought, a disposable computer - lol! one time use, that'll be 800k Yen plz ty.)

I think Dell should put stickers on the Laptop stating "Handle with care. Might explode"!

Note to self, don't leave laptop on wooden floor.

Hey, I'm 17 and live in Australia. Today, I came home from TAFE, took my laptop off the charger, brought it into my lounge, sat down, with it on my lap, logged on, was on the net for 5 minutes before I noticed smoke and then, the flame on it. Your not the only one and Dell has said that I will get a new one, upgraded in 3 weeks. The thing that bothers me is that I have had it for 8 months and it was a normal routine. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one, but it sucks that it has happened.
