Ram modules can be made from different types of individual chips. If you go to Crucial.com and look up your system.

In the fine print you will see the modules described as 256x64, or 512x64 depending on the size. Some RAM often referred to as "AMD" RAM uses 256x128 which would equal a 512x64 module. It may be easier and cheaper to find 8GB modules in x128 but it would probably be a waste of time.
Grateful for your input buddy.. this is why this question gets asked over and over.. I believe all the manuals and documentation points to 8gb max.. but many a guy has announced they have successfully installed 16gb in this machine.. would love someone who has tried to confirm either way...

Try Dell Community Forums. This sort of thing gets discussed there all the time. Be sure and read the whole thread because it usaully starts off with someone quoting the manual and then others posting actual results.

Dell almost always requires "low density" RAM ,x64 in the spec. sheet.
There's a very good chance it will work. Dell only publishes what they tested and sold at the time the system was built.

thank you for your help.. I will indeed checkout their forum..

excuse me for my ignorance but what does "Dell almost always requires "low density" RAM ,x64 in the spec. sheet." mean?

thank you again

ps I posted on their forums and they dont seem to be sure either..
