dell optiplex cpu compatibility

I have a Dell optiplex GX680 with a pentium d805 @2.66 ghz. Would a penium d 945 be a good upgrade? I'm pretty sure this is compatible, tho I have never done a cpu upgrade. What I'm really wondering is how an e6850 or an e8400 would work. Would I have to change bios? Are the e series chips compatible with this mobo? I understand the e series chips run cooler and faster than the pentium d chips but I don't want to buy one if they won't work on this board.

It's very likely not going to work. OEM boards like Dell boards only have a limited compatibility. I'm not sure if the 945 will work either. It has a higher FSB speed and is 65nm, where the 805 is 90nm.

Dont bother. Just get a new system - that computer is too old to make a worthwhile upgrade.

I know that GX620 maximum CPU upgrade is Pentium D 960, so your as well for sure. Is it worth it, I don't know, all depends on your budget. If you have more than 400 USD for upgrades, it is better to build your own, if you have less than 300USD, we can continue talking here.
