I know there are a lot of post and searches on google for why 1600 would run at 1333. I got 11 years under my belt so I'm not a noob. I do IT work and fix computers for a living so tech talk is very much so understood by me.
Well heres the situation. Got in two new computers. First two we have ordered from dell running the new Ivy Bridge i5's and i7's. Ones a i5 3320m the other a i7 3770. Because Dell is such a rip off with their ram we usually order least amount of ram then get something like GSkill or Corsair to add in to help save cost to our customers. In the past i have only worked with DDR3 1333 on dells but these two are being stuborn. I don't know if its me or something with dell. Dell Claims its incompatible memory, but I call BS and they just don't want to deal with it. The first is a brand new Optiplex 9010 which is the i7. Comes with a stock hynix 4 gig DDR3 1600 stick. By it self it shows 1600 in bios. We got a kingston hyper X 3 KHX1600C9D3/4G. Now with or with out the Hynix it always shows as 1333. I toss it in my bench machine (AMD PII 955 ASRock 880GM-LE it will show as 1600) So I know its not the ram. Now on the laptop tho we got a Corsair Vengeance 4 GB CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9. Now it also has a stock nanya 2 GB. No in this case i can understand if it under clock because of different module size. I'm NOT looking for "Why run a 2 and a 4" Don't need that. I know all about dual, tri and quad channel. My issue is in the past I've never had an issue with Speed changes with DDR 1 2 3 (DDR 3 1333 or lower tho) before. But when I run them by themselves they run at 1600 bit together at 1333? I have checked into the whole XMP as well and there is no XMP settings in any dell that I have ever seen (Well minus the XPS/Alienware).
EDIT!!! As I searched more though the "Feedback" on newegg about the kingston ram I decided to leave this in here for future people to read. BEWARE what memory you buy! In my case the motherboard only supports up to 1.5v for the memory! This kingston ram REQUIRES 1.65v to run at 1600! It will run at 1333 for 1.5v! So please ignore the case with the Desktop. As for the laptop everything is 1.5v. Any advice will help.
If i get some help and insight great. If not well its not gonna stop me from coming to the greatest tech forums/Review site there is on the planet!
