Dell XPS 8100 4 wire cpu fan replacement with 3 wire?

I have noticed in the last month or two my i7-860 have been about 10c higher than usual and its the fan going south cause I applied new thermal paste which helped a little. Anyway I bought a Masscool cpu cooler for a LGA775 socket so it should work fine except its a 3 wire fan no PWM 4th wire. Is there anyway I can still use the cooler and 3 wire fan? Is there a utility that will work to control fan speed? Finally will my sysyem act retarded since there is no communication with fan after I remove the old 4 wire old fan? Any advice, help, or info would be great! Thanks again!

The fourth wire is to control fan speed. Without it, the fan will always run at 100% unless you get an inline resistor for it (which will make it always run slower and quieter).

Will a 3-pin cooler work? Absolutely.

Will it cause strange behavior? Very unlikely.

Yeah I understand how it works Pulse Code Mod. but I didnt know if there was a way to mod the 3 wire fan to work like a 4 wire fan? Cant use speedfan either can I?
