Desktop file dublication

So I was trying to change the default location of my downloads from chrome so they would go straight to my desktop. I looked up how to do it on google and it told me to go into the properties of the download folder and change the location to the desktop folder, but this only merged the folders not change the download location. Now I can't change them back, you can't delete them, change the name, if you change the location it just changes the location for both folders. I've tried making another downloads folder and merging it with that but it said you cant merge a parent with a child.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You did it incorrectly.
There is a difference between Win 7 & 8, and 8.1 and 10.
Lots of places on the web still list the old way of doing it.
