Question Desktop layout on one of my other hard-drives

How can I arrange my files on an other hard drive within my pc to have the same functionality as my main desktop... ie... I can move about Shortcuts and files folders in any arrangement I like.... Horizontal, vertical, etc...

Entirely unsure of what you're actually trying to do here.

When on my desktop... I can drag about files to any position on the desktop I want. In the other hard drives, I cannot. They can only be presented in orders.

Presumably you only have one OS here?

Yes, I have Windows on my main hard-drive for applications, etc... and other hard drives for storage.

Accessing your other drive via File Explorer is not like what you see in the Desktop.

The Desktop Library has unique properties, to let you move things around.
File Explorer does not.

Yeah... is there some sort of app, etc... that can give this function... It's just I'm very "practical" and like to see things being moved around. It's just how I need to organize all my projects from time to time.

I do not know of any add on or application that will make File Explorer look and act like your "Desktop".

File explorer can sort of do this but doesn't save the icon positions, so once you refresh or leave the folder and come back they are scrambled again as the custom arrangement is lost. XP was the last time you could disable auto-arrange (while there have been workarounds since, Microsoft have always eventually disabled them from working again with updates)

The only 3rd party File Manager replacement that I know does save custom icon order and positions for each folder is Hidemaru Filer Classic. I don't know if the Windows App Store version can do the same.

In a way, this behavior is reminiscent of the Windows 3.11 Program Manager.

You can put shortcuts to your files and projects on the Desktop.
But you might find it gets too cluttered.

Also remember that you can set up multiple Desktops in Windows.

Doing so may prove helpful with organizational requirements you desire.

The problem with that is windows doesn't let you set different icons per desktop, all it does is changes the wallpaper. I live in hope the multi desktop might one day remember different icons or programs.

Seems if you really want multi desktop you probably need to pay for it. I am sure there are choices out there, I haven't looked recently.

I just tinkered around a bit with different desktops based on what I was doing at the time.

E.g.: finances, Tom's, Ancestry, system maintenance, etc..

Objective simply to reduce the number of icons versus different icons between desktops.

However, set that aside and created some short cut folders that contained the links and apps that I needed.

May be revisiting multiple desktops though - may be a bit quicker in some ways. TBD.
