Yep, I did. Saw the mail headers and realised that John didn't send
those. The "from" address has been faked and the SMTP from which it has
been sent is not the domain's registered SMTP in SPF.

Yes, Charles, I suspect most of us did. I regarded it as spam trying to
get me to respond.
