Difference between Dual Channel Mode & Single Channel Mode?

Whats the main difference between Dual Channel Mode & Single Channel Mode ?

I have Intel D915GEV motherboard and have 4 RAM Slots like this:
DIMM 0
DIMM 1
DIMM 0 (512 MB DDR 2 RAM)
DIMM 1 (512 MD DDR 2 RAM)

I have 2X512 MB DDR2 RAM and I am running it in a single channel mode.

Either putting RAM in single channel or double channel i get the same speed.

use the dimms as shown, it won't change speed but ups your bandwidth, you have to use a benchmark to notice the small difference, but it is there
