difference in res ratios?

What's the deal between a 4:3 ratio and a 5:4 ratio? 1280x1024 is 5:4 and 1280*960 is 4:3. Is one "better" than the other or something?

no, it's just how the vertical and horizontal resolutions compare.

It does matter if you happen to be picky. Things look slightly fatter in 1280x1024 to me. Most screens are designed for 4:3 so if you display a 5:4 ratio on them there's vertically more pixels packed in there which will slightly skew the image. Most dont' notice it enough to bother them.
