I noticed that there are sometimes big difference in
prices for CDR media. And I would like to bye the
cheapest.

Beside the reliability for speed of writing,
or packaging, is there any difference in
quality which justify high price ?

BAsically the dyes used account for the price differences (some are better than others), and also sometimes brand name.

For data go with the cheapest, as cdroms have good lasers.

For audio you should experiment with different brands. Sony CDQ-74CN, which can be obtained at Best Buy, were the only brand that would play in my Dodge cd player and a friends home cd player. Don't buy a shitload of cheap cd's only to find out your player doesn't play them. I've also heard that Kodak's with the gold surface were good for audio, but I've haven't seen them in stores.

There are some good deal out there these days. My buddy picked up 200 80 min. "Prime Peripherals" at Office Depot for $60 - $40 rebate - $20 instant store rebate = $0 Not a bad deal. He also picked up 100 74 min. TDK's at Costco for $45 - $30 rebate.

I've been burning CDs for over 2 years now. I've always bought the cheapest CDs I could find. I've never had any problems, either with data or with audio.

Buy cheap.

If you want long term storage the only one to get is the gold. Supposodly the dye's in the other colors don't last as long. I take a lot of digital pictures and I back up my pictures on gold CD's. For all my other burning (audio and data) I buy the cheapest CD's possible!

If memory serves, I believe Roxio has a discussion on the different dyes on their web site. Kodak Gold is good, but costs around $1,29 a disk. I've can burn all day using Prime Peripherals (Okie) and Imation. A friend swears by Memorex and TDK. All I can say is don't by house brands or no names. What you save in money you pay in aggravation. I can let you have a good deal on ten coasters I made from a box of CompUSA disks.

This is a decent site that discusses the different media types, If you dig deep enough it will even tell you what brands are known to be better, can overwrite, etc.
