Dimension 8100 Memory Problem

Hi,

I have two identical Dimension 8100, Intel 850 - 400, 128 megs (2 x 64
megs rimms Samsung MR16R0824BN1-CK8 800-45).

The BIOS is the A09 (I run Win2K).

I've tried to upgrade the memory to 384 megs using a Kingston RIMM kit
(2 x 128 megs - KTD-DM800/128) but the system seems unable to see more
256 megs.

That's what the BIOS tell:

Slot 1: 64
Slot 2: 64
Slot 3: 64
Slot 4: 64

But the first pair of slots actually contains the two Kingston 128
Rimms and the second pair contains the two Samsung 64 Rimms.

The situation does not change if I put the Kingstons in the first pair
and two CRIMMS in the second pair: the system sees the two 128
Kingstons as if they were 64 megs RIMMS.
This happens with both my Dimension 8100.

What was your point with this post? Crucial NEVER sold RDRam, as Micron
never made it.

The Dimension 8100? No, it doesn't. It supports both, but shipped with
PC800 non-ECC.

Right it supports both...as per website it can also use ECC-RDRAM ..I did
not say
the DELL Dimension ships with this type of RAM. If one wants to use
ECC-RDRAM
in that computer a simple change in bios is all it takes.

I suppose, but if he is upgrading, a recommendation for memory that matches
what is in his computer makes more sense.

Also I thought that the problem could be related to the BIOS. I've
found what follows on the Dell web site:

memory and replace completely. To upgrade the memory, a BIOS update is
required. The latest BIOS revision and instructions on how to flash

What does this mean? If you don't upgrade the BIOS the systems won't
see the new RIMMS?

I bought my two Dimension 8100 both with the standard configuration of
128 Megs (2x64 Samsung RIMMS).

Then I bought 2 Kingston kits 2x128 Rimms each.

The idea was to mount the two Kingston kits in one of the Dimension
8100 (for a total of 512 Megs) and put the four 64 megs modules in the
other Dimension 8100 (total of 256 Megs).

I've upgraded the BIOS to the latest suggested release for Win2K (A09).
Any idea?

Wow! The information quoted on the Dell web site is dis-information, unless
there is somehow a strange BIOS limitation that prohibits the BIOS from seeing
more memory. Or maybe I don't understand the context of the quoted info.

replace completely." I can come up with lots of examples with RAMBUS memory
where this would not be the case. It all depends on the original configuration

I've not run into problems using Kingston RIMMs in Dells and other brands of
computers with RAMBUS memory. All I can suggest at this point is that you may
have defective Kingston memory. Can you return it for a refund?
