DirectX 10 Shootout: Nvidia vs. ATI

People said that about the 2900XT, but look what happened it didn't perform as expected. Now ATI is doing a die shrink and calling it the 2950XT, that will give it low power consumption and maybe higher clock speeds but that aloan might not be enough to take on the 8800 GTX. We can only wait and see, but don't get hooked on the hype train!

The benches in the first post are off now. That's the OLD 7.9, now it's the 7.10 with some major fixes and speed increases. http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/34344/118/
Maybe 5% to 30% increase in speed on those benchmarks for ATI cards.

Just going to Add some testing i did. They did state there was some X1000 card improvements too....I don't see much tho

System

Q6600 @ 3.0
3 Gigs of DDR @ 667 4,4,4,10

2 x 500gig drives
2 x 320gig drives
2 x 250gig drives(raid 0)
Creative Audigy 2zs
Samsung DVD burner
ATI X1900XT 512mb

3DMarks 2005
12204 - 7.9
12157 - 7.10

3DMarks 2006
6638 - 7.9
6615 - 7.10

HL2 Based
hl2settingsee3.gif

1280 x 1024
Lost Coast
93.42 - 7.9 (this was +/- 2 - 4 fps run to run)
93.80 - 7.10

CS Source
175.14 - 7.9
171.42 - 7.10

ET QW Demo(1280x1024 max without shadows[my preference] + frame rate lock off[i think it locks to 120 since i was lazy and just did a copy paste to my cfg file])
min, avg, max
62, 119, 77.154 - 7.9
57, 120, 77.133 - 7.10

This was hard as the demos seem to be capped at 30fps....so i had to play a bit....I only care about average in this case as the max and min could play from anything(explosions, effects from transparent forcefields ect)....

They did say there was a improvement for 7.10(for the X1000 cards) on ETQW but i don't see it....

At least for the last generation....there is nothing new here....

For the 2900XT's fingers crossed....

1) I was wondering if any one knows what kind of PCI express going to be used by ATI HD 2950 and Geforce 8800 GT. I heard its going to be PCI-2.0. If that’s the case, can I use a-PCI-2.0 card in my PCI-Express 16x slot?

2) Can the ATI 2900Pro or Geforce 8800GTS out put 1080P on to a TV(SAMSUNG Model FP-T5084) or is it just 1080i? When I ask that question from ATI they said it can, but when I go to the flowing manufacture’s website, it said “HDMI output support all display resolutions up to 1920x1080i only”. Is there some other brand that can output 1080p using HDMI cables?

Thanks.

First, I will say that my response is in speculation based off facts I may or may not understand. That asside. I hope I can easy your pain of not knowing.

I heard very little on the 2950, in fact I know that ATI is coming out with a new age 3900 "it just supports DX 10.1 but still the same architecture for the most part." This will use PCIe 2.0. I would like to bet my left hand that PCIe 2.0 is not backwards compatable. However with the new 38x chipset from Intel, the PCIe 2.0 slot they have on that almost demands that it is backwards compatable. "No cards out that are 2.0"

I read up on the 8800 GT however I can not tell you if it uses PCIe 2.0 if it does, that would explain it's performance compared to 8800GTX.

Second!
ATI card as far as I know display in 720 and 1080i for HD.
However 1080is a standard. Here's a quoted text from MSI's hd 2600xt diamond's stie.

"Supports industry standard EIA-861B video modes including 480p, 720p and 1080i. For a full list of currently supported modes, contact your AMD CSS representative."

You should be able to plug and play away. Believe me, try it. The card is great with video. "ATI I trust with video more."

No it doesn't use the full bandwidth of the 2.0 bus, if it did then it would be more powerful than the GTX by about 1.5 times. Not even the Ultra can saturate the PCI-E 1.0 bus. It will be sometime before they do, by that time everyone will already have the newer PCI-E 2.0 interface just waiting for the hardware that will use it.

From what I understand PCIe x16 and PCIe 2.0 slots have the same interface. The only difference is that PCIe 2.0 delivers 150 Watts of power to the graphic card where as PCIe x16 only puts out 75 watts.

The main intention behind the for development of the PCIe 2.0 slot was to eliminate the need for power cables to be connected to video card.

PCIe 2.0 cards will work fine on a PCIe x16 slots. You just have to make sure all of the power cables are hooked up to the card.

Look at all of the 8800GTs that have been sold on new egg over the past 2 days. How many of those people do you think have motherboards with PCIe 2.0 slots? I would guess almost none.

Read the headline article on Tom's Hardware about the 8800GT. It is extremely impressive. This card is much better than I thought it was going to be.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/geforce_8800_gt/

Premilinary estimates indicate that the ATI 3850 card coming out on November 15th will not be as fast as the 8800GT. However it may be able to beat it far as a bang for your buck is concerned where as it is estimated to be $30-$50 less than the 8800GT. But then again as of today it is an unreleased product so all of those estimates by so called experts really don't hold much water at this point.

If I was you I would wait until Thanksgiving when more 8800GT s are in supply. That with the Xmas rush may force vendors to lower their prices some. If you bought today you would pay a premium. But even paying a premium for a card like this it is still incredible value.

This was the worst review ive seen in ages. WHY ARE THEY STILL USING CATALYST 7.9???? Total bogus not using the latest drivers. Look at the 8800gt review, the 2900xt is consistently ahead of the 8800 gts, and no longer dies on its arse in STALKER and Supreme Commander. Exceedingly misleading review, re-hashing old benchmark results. Difference between 7.9 and 7.10 is NIGHT AN DAY!
