I've bought a Gigabyte GA7VTXE+ mobo and its got an AC97 Codec (whatever that is) instead of the Creative chip that a lot of their boards have, and I can't see any way of disabling it in the manual, which is a nuisance cos I want to use my Souhndblaster Live with it. Is it simply the case that I'm stuck with the onboard sound, or am I missing something here? The manual does not mention it in the bios section for onboard peripherals, only mentions disabling the Creative chip on the other model that shares the manual, no mention of the Codec. I want to establish whether I can disable it before I use it as I will return the board if I can't.

Hey A,

Most on-board extras, can be didabled in the bios. Also, to run you need to install the sound software on mobo cd. So go into bios, disable on board sound & do not install sound card software from mobo cd.

god knows your entire system setup & he would answer your questions if he could just stop laughing

Okay, maybe i'll connect it up and see, but there's something else I'm confused about. his board doesn't have a clock ratio switch.
Its got a clk switch with choice between CPU 100 or 133.3.
In the BIOS there is a choice of set CPU host clock as 100, 133 or by hardware monitor. I woukld have expected to see some kind of multiplier ratio choice someware. The CPU I'm putting in is a 1.33 hz Athlon (not XP) with 266 FSB.
Does any one have any thoughts on setting it up before I proceed further? Maybe this should be a new thread.....

your reply was a bit confusing, but most gigabyte motherboards can overclock very easily. As far as the sound goes it is in your biow, it will be something like Onboard Creative Sound on/off or AC97 sound on/off. Usually these are in with the raid controller, onboard lan, ide/usb controls in the bios. Just hit Del when the post comes up. Also you can overclock from windows, just go to their web site and download the Easy Tune III

Couldn't the onboard sound chip be disabled using Device Manager? Just a thought.
