Hello,
I have a 2nd hand PC that originally had 12GB RAM
3 sticks of kingston 9905403-084 a01lf
and 3 sticks of Kingston 9905403-152.A00LF

Some time back windows started showing only 8GB
Yesterday I tried to pull out the sticks and put them back in
and on restart Windows showed only 4GB

I've removed the separate 3 sticks
and both sets will come out as 6gb in CPU-Z
But 4GB in Wndows
- so the RAM is unlikely to be faulty

If i put all 6 CPU-Z it shows 12gb
But windows still 4gb

CPU: i7 960

Can you advise on a fix to this issue?

Many thanks in any help you can give

How RAMs show up
- i can swap both 3X sticks and CPU-Z shows 6gb for each set
or I can put in all 6 and it shows 12gb
But windows will just show me 4

you know
it happened last time from 12 to8 when I changed a CPU fan
and now from 8 to 4 when I cleaned the fan

it will probably be it? This is the latest BIOS for the motherboard, newest asus has at least

Why does that happen though, the CPU itself has been running smoothly

Took out cooler+CPU
returned them back

and returned all sticks
now I have 8gb back! But CPU-Z still shows 12

- it's still possible some are not functional ?
I've put the different type of RAM one each into the channels

But last time it went from 12 to 8 I wasn't touching them at all

So I suppose still a CPU issue, not sure what more I can do though with it

I have the same problem .
Gigabyte Ga-x58A - Ud3r . This is a replacement for the Asus board which I will have to revisit . Ok , The board was shown working and all slots populated and shown in BIOS . Then I delayed the build for a couple of months . Finally built and memory problems - only detected 4 gb though speccy and gpu-z claimed more . Got it to 6 gb with 3 slots populated after pressing down on the heatsink while the case was flat , and stable cold starting no problem . Then I tried 4 slots (triple channel ) Cleaned the slot and again pressed on the heatsink and it was showing 8 gb in bios but Windows hung on the starting windows page before the logo . Removed the ram from the DDR3 - 2 slot ( closest to the CPU ) and windows fired up .
How can the slot prevent windows from booting . ? From what I have experienced It needs a shim between the heatsink mounting bracket and the top of the heatsink block .
