Well they are now because there aren't really going to be any new in box at this point. But the prices did drop even for the new in box ones after maxwell had been on the shelves for a bit.
I have a feeling the 780 Ti price drop has to do with the limited 3 GB of VRAM, which becomes an issue in 2016. If the GTX 780 Ti's had 6 GB of VRAM, for argument's sake, they'd probably high artificially high prices.
Once in a while a thread pops up where somebody bought a new GTX 660 or something like that for $300. I feel sorry for those people, though it'd would have taken them 2 seconds to do the research, so their own fault none the less.
the 780 cam with a 6gb vram option from evga and its price still dropped. Of course the introduction of the 900 series and its vram pushed 700 series out the door but the performance difference in say a 970 vs 770 or 780 was crazy. the 970 blew the 780 away. Thats what pushed the prices down. Maxwell was extremely powerful.
but imagine right now people would rather get one single faster card rather than for example get that 780 to SLI their current 780. they were usually expensive by the time most people want to SLI theirs.
Well thats because the titans aren't really gaming gpu's. They are rendering gpu's that happen to double as gaming gpu's. Thats why there arent any custom cooled models like there are with actual gaming gpu's.
The original titan if you even watch the announcement for it was a design/rendering gpu. People happen to use it as a gaming gpu because it had extra vram and was capable. These days they market them as gaming gpu's because they know enthusiasts will drop the ridiculous amounts of money for them.
Does anybody think the gtx 970 will get a price drop once pascal comes out?
I'm going to upgrade my GPU sometime this year, I'm debating whether to get a cheap GTX 970 or a Pascal gtx 1060.
It would have to be dirt cheap and the Pascal x60 series replacement would have to be pants, but as there are no benchies yet (and might not be until about mid May I reckon, before they start surfacing), good luck with that!
Stavromast do you have any hard proof directly from nvidia that the new cards are going to have 8gb vram? Or any verified by nvidia info on the new gpu's?
Since AMD already has 8GB on the 390, I'm sure Nvidia will have it. Otherwise you'll hear a lot of "AMD's last gen cards have more VRAM than Nvidia's newest!"
Thats not new for nvidia though. Look how things are now. Even the 970 with half the vram of the 390 and it barely gets beat even at 1440p against the 970. Vram again means nothing if the reat of the gpu can utilize it. Nvidias flagship 980ti is? 6gb vram and its faster that what? You guessed it again pretty much anything amd has out to conpete with it. Just how the 780ti was with the 290x and 290. Vram isnt what makes a card......yes it helps but it isnt the make or break and nvidia knows this. Thats why they arent running around slapping obsurd amounts of vram on various cards. I do think nvidia would he silly if they didnt make even their lowest end card have at least 6gb vram for Pascal though. I see the 1080ti or whatever its gonna be called having probably 8 or 12gb and the reat being 8 or 6.
The original titan did not drop in price because of it's unlocked double precision. In case of titan black the price actually rise up to 1300 once ncidia EOL the card from the market. If your concern is about rendering only even titan x with it's cripple DP could do the job. But unlocked DP? You won't get that usually unless you go for tesla or amd firepro. And i'm not really sure if quadro have unlock DP. because nvidia in the past have introduce a package of quadro + tesla where quadro will only handle rendering while the tesla will handle all the compute task.
Geforce with unlocked DP is a waste for gamer but for those that use DP it was a steal. Titan and titan black is about as fast as the fastest tesla available back then but the price is not half but a few times lower than tesla. If intel did not "donate" their phi to china Tian He probably china already buy lots of titan from nvidia instead of tesla lol 😛
And this is market that amd did not dare to compete with nvidia yet (imagine those hawaii with it's unlocked DP costing only a few hundreds instead of a few thousands like their firepro) maybe because they afraid if they do so then peple that going with and solution have no reason to buy their expensive firepro cards.
Ao about this VRAM thingy.....Nvidia simply did not give 980/970 more VRAM because of they want to push people towards 980ti if they want more VRAM. yeah slapping more vram sometimes just pose as a marketing bullet but market actually ask for it this time. Because with the arrival of new console VRAM usage suddenly spike. Just like how Qualcomm in the end bow to market pressure when they create octa core SoC when before that they mock mediatek octa core approach.
And i think nvidia also understand this. Hence the existence of 960 4GB. those card will not exist if nvidia did not allow partners to do it even if board partners really want it. But in case of 980/970 i believe it is not just because they want to push people towards 980ti they also don't want those 980/970 having more VRAM than 980ti. If 980ti somehow have 8GB VRAM then we might see 980/970 with 8GB VRAM.
You can consider titan x as cheap man's quadro. How much does it cost again for quadro m6000? If your work does not really need the precision and certified driver offred by quadros then titan x is cheap replacement to those M6000.
Most of the people that buy Titan X are enthusiast gamers that don't want any compromises. Some use the card istead of the quadro cards however the 980 ti can also be used when less VRAM is required.
These days there are already some games that use more Than 6 gb of VRAM at 1440p + resolutions and I'm sure more are coming....
I owned a gtx 780 ti in the past. Call of duty ghosts and watchdogs hitched/ stuttered because of the lack of VRAM.
I got the 980 & the 4 gb of VRAM was a game changer for watchdogs, My friends 970 also was much smoother than the 780 ti.
If I bought a Titan black I wouldn't have needed to deal with the stuttering /hitching because of the 6 gb frame buffer.
There are rumours that 4k consoles are coming which most likely means more VRAM will be used...
