Hi guys, sorry for the silly question.

I brought a DisplayPort to HDMI cable to connect my monitor to my laptop, but it doesn't work. After researching, I found out that they are not compatible.

My question is: shouldn’t they be compatible since they serve the same purpose, even though DisplayPort offers better quality?

DisplayPort to HDMI cable is unidirectional. Works in one direction only.
DP on laptop side, HDMI on monitor side.

If you connected it as HDMI on laptop side, DP on monitor side, then it will not work.

What model monitor do you have?
What model laptop do you have?

If monitor has both HDMI and DP inputs, then just use straight HDMI-HDMI cable or DP-DP cable
(depending on what video output your laptop has).

Ohhh I see. Thank you for this!

Depending on your laptop, in addition to the HDMI port you mentioned, it may support DisplayPort via a USB-C port. What is the make/model of your laptop?
Unfortunately, my laptop does not have a DisplayPort, but it does have a USB-C. I got a display cable so that I wouldn’t have to keep switching the HDMI cables in and out of my monitor (my monitor only has one hdmi port). So I thought I'd get a displayport cable so that I would not have to swap the hdmi's but now I realise that they only connect in one direction. Therefore, I will just continue using my HDMI cables.
Thank you for the help

You would need a different adapter to do what you were trying to do. Something like this and then a regular DP to DP cable:
