I have an Asus VQ248QE monitor that I have been using a dual link DVI cable with to get the 144Hz setting. However I wanted to use a Displayport cable as that will also allow the 144Hz setting, but when I connected the cable, after Windows installed drivers for it, it muted my speakers and headset. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I'm running on a Gigabyte GeForce 670 GTX as well as a Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional soundcard.

This is very common. When you first plug in the DP, windows sees it as a new sound output (DP carries sound just like HDMI). To restore your sound, right click on the volume icon in the system tray and select "Playback Devices." From that control panel you should be able to disable DP audio and set your soundcard as the default output device.
