DisplayPort - to - DVI ?!

Hello everyone

I have a newly built PC and I have it connected to a new monior I bought along with its parts via HDMI,as I do not have a graphic card yet, and I have a single HDMI port in my MoBo (Asus Z170 Pro Gaming), besides single ports for VGA, DVI-D & DisplayPort. If I want to connect to another monitor, and I cannot use HDMI, as my only HDMI port in the MoBo is occupied by the first monitor, and other monitor has DVI-D & VGA, what do you recommend to use of the following ?!

I have the option to use a DVI-to-DVI Vs. a DisplayPort-to-DVI cable (check the link below). The DisplayPort may be a superior connection to DVI, however, I am not sure if I am going to get any extra image quality or FPS with the DisplayPort-to-DVI connection.

In that case, would the DVI connection to the monitor be a bottleneck, and reduce any advantage that I may get from the DisplayPort ?! In this sense, would DVI-to-DVI & DisplayPort-to-DVI give the same image quality and FPS because of the DVI connection on the monitor side ?!?!

Sorry for the prolonged thread
Thanks & Regards

Hello... Cables have an international standard written for their use and construction... The Digital data streams through the CABLE as per the Video card produces it... All types and Specs can be found on WIKI pages... DVI and HDMI have compatible adaptors/gender changers... Display port is a "royalty free", "daisy Chain" designed system and has extra wires and could have extra communication thru it... and thus "adaptors" could be? should be avoided.

The item you Linked Looks well constructed and could work for your Needs... But no "performance" enhancement through this cable, if that is what you (OP'd) hoped for... and I can get DVI cables for $5. HDMI/DVI adaptor $3.

For your typical use and MY use... the DVI cable does as the cable is designed to do... well within the specs of what your hardware can deliver. But if you Need Sound output TOO... then Display port or HDMI ports should be used. B )

Thanks again for your reply

As I am already using my only HDMI port, I have the option to use DisplayPort or DVI. Since DisplayPort-to-DVI will not provide any extra performance, then I see no point in spending the extra money. For the sound output, I have speakers connected to the PC. However, I would like to ask one last question, that is for a given resolution, wouldn't the an image carried through DisplayPort or HDMI be delivered to the monitor at a higher quality than DVI-D ?! Or would they all be the same, as they all carry images digitally, and it may not make a difference as long as the frame rate and image size (typical FHD for me) can be handled by the port type (max resolution for each type of cables).

Thanks again

Hello... As stated before there is a written standard for performance and use... there are Different versions of HDMI 1.0 1.4 2.0 etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI read the chart.
And different DisplayPort versions... http://www.avadirect.com/blog/displayport-vs-hdmi-vs-dvi-vs-vga/

Your Connection will depend on what is on your HARDWARE, if your hardware is 4K ready, then the proper connector was designed and installed on it... And you would get the Rated version/cable/connectors that fits them together.

All Cables should have the proper standard, it was designed for, printed on the "jacket-insulation" or the connector type on the end... HDMI has changed a lot versions through the years... and it is easy to find LOW cost earlier versions that will not be the proper SPEC for todays hardware and use.

SOOO... what is your hardware and Display resolution you want to use?

As I mentioned, my monitor is capable of displaying FHD, while my hardware can display up to 4K. I am using an HDMI 1.4 cable, besides a VGA cable included with the monitor (in one box). I am going to be using Full HD of course, as it wouldn't make a difference if I use any higher resolution. However, I have VGA & HDMI (1.4) cables already connected, and there is an obvious advantage in the image quality for the HDMI connection, in terms of the colour quality, crisp images, and clarity of images and colours displayed. That's why I am asking if there is a noticeable difference between HDMI Vs DVI-D in terms of quality of display for a given resolution. I see from the link you sent, and from some search I did that the standards determine the quality of conversion, or lets say the finally delivered image. From the link you sent, I found that HDMI Vs DVI can interchangeably transfer similar quality pictures, while DisplayPort as I found online is fully compatibly with either HDMI or DVI, which requires conversion of signal and transformation of voltage.

Anyway
Thanks again
