I don't pirate or bit torrent unless I am downloading or uploading a new Linux .iso
I went to the theater (can not beat the big screen) and watched it the first weekend. It was a real good movie too. Different from your run of the mill Hollywood release and no big name actors that was a breath of fresh air too. I recommend it.
Can not wait for the sequel.

I also Watched at the Cinema and downloaded it, and it was worth the money, downloaded it to see what I missed when I had to go to the john, and see what Those damned censors cut (thankfully non,I'll also buy the official DVD when it comes out for the extra content.

So what's the excuse here? There are plenty of valid reasons for pirating something but I can't think of one for pirating a movie that is still in the theaters.

[citation][nom]-unknown-[/nom]You'll never see any concrete figures on 'lost sales' as its all hypothetical.[/citation]

[citation][nom]D_Kuhn[/nom]I suspect that most downloaders are kids ... [or] those... strapped but have broadband access (college students for instance).[/citation]

You're both absolutely right-- The whole concept of "Lost sales" is complete balderdash! It's not even a philo-economically sound notion-- anyone with any sense knows that 85% of downloaders are people who, for whatever reason, CAN'T carve out enough of income to pay for a product (no sale lost)... the other 15% are typically hardened, stick-it-to-the-man types who WON'T ever pay for a product even though they can afford it (again, no sale lost)!

When I was a kid, and didn't have cash, I used to grab everything off of BBSs (or make copies of friends' discs)... when I grew up, and got a job that could adequately support my penchant for the accumulation of entertainment media, I actually quit pirating cold-turkey and started purchasing the music, movies and/or games I wanted...

I go to http://www.themoviespoiler.com/ and look for a heads-up as to what happens in the movie. I really don't need to spend $7 minimum to find out a movie sucks. I decided District 9 can wait for cable TV without any lengthy download...

It is worth the money to watch it in theaters. I saw it in theaters, and I have downloaded it. If I believe apiece of art is worth my patronage, I will put money in the hat.

To be honest, I don't know what District 9 is - but I'm heading over to IMDb to find out. I guess it's a film of some importance if it's so popular (?)

seen it in the movies, absolutely great movie

will download bluray version down the line though 😉 and see part 2 in the theaters again

[citation][nom]D_Kuhn[/nom]and District 9 WAS quite good, it was not as good as "The Moon"... best Sci-Fi movie I've seen in years... but it was well worth paying to see it on the Big Screen.[/citation

Please elaborate on this movie "The Moon". I've never heard of it nor has Netflix.

Seriously? what do you mean "lengthy"? With a halfway decent broadband cable connection, you can grab a darn fine lookin' HQ rip in under 20 minutes...

I've uh.. *coughs* I've heard... you know.. from pirates who... pirate...

Moon is a film about a dude (played by Sam Rockwell) who spends three years working on the moon along with a computer/robot called GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey).

I haven't seen it but apparently he/everything else goes a bit nuts towards the end of his three year shift. Looks great, though. Dying to watch it.

I watched this movie in an awesome DLP cinema a few days ago.

Thank you Jane McEntegart for telling everyone out-of-the-loop(like myself) that this great movie is available in DVD-quality for free downloading.
I've voting Jane as Queen of the Movie Pirates.(or at least a felony accomplice)

Most Sci Fi franchises have gone the way of being far too predictable. Like Star Trek for example. I expect a Sci Fi movie to challenge my imagination and keep me guessing. District 9 did that in spades. Albeit a little disturbing, D9 was very good!

That battle armor / light mech did it for me. It had me thinking that a real version actually existed. It was an good Sci-Fi with a decent story. It was well worth the $10.

If I paid to watch it in the theater, does it really count as piracy if I DL'd it? Not to mention when it comes out on Blu-ray, I will be purchasing it as well. Independent studies should be done on the effect of piracy on DVD sales.

District 9 is the best movie I've seen in a long time, and I really want it to be a success. If it were any other movie, I'd probably wouldn't care (like Wolverine), but District 9 amazing, especially considering the shoe-string budget it was built on. Just watching it, it's easy to tell that a lot of hard work and talent had to make up for what money couldn't cover, and it's only made about $100 million so far. If there ever was a movie that deserved 8 bucks to go see, it's this one.

Did I dl the movie and watch it, yes! Did I pirate it no. I did not pirate the movie because I didn't copy it and distribute for profit. You don't know if a movie is good until you see it, so to those who go on about such things 'if it's good enough I'll pay to see' DUH! And to those who say it hurts the industry, there has been a single iota of data that supports file sharing is harmful in anyway to the bottomline.

District 9 boxoffice to date:

Domestic: $103,274,000 87.8%
+ Foreign: $14,336,708 12.2%
= Worldwide: $117,610,708

Oh by the way Production Budget: $30 million!

[citation][nom]dksoba[/nom]District 9 wasn't really that good IMHO. Maybe because I watched it in a movie theatre. Still, better than most movies in the theatres right now. Inglorious Bastards..now that was awesome![/citation]

Inglorious Bastards is a remake from 1978 originally called "Quel maledetto treno blindato" but the same story. The recent release just has all the Tarantino scripting. Even though District 9 isnt a landmark "Art" film. Its still one of the most original SciFi movies Ive seen since "Enemy Mine".
