Do i have GPU problems?

Hello everyone!

So ive had my pc for like 4 years now, it has been running very good ever since. After a few weeks of not using it ive run into a problem. For some reason there are some big screen tearings (if thats correct) big green stripes. I have tried overclocking my r9 270x in the past but i have never pushed it to its limit, i only tried it by small amounts and never allot. Maybe this could be a problem?

In the device manager there is also a triangle next to my gpu so that is strange aswell. The reason i have my GPU disabled is that if i want to try to start my pc while the gpu is enabled its stuck on the loading screen.

Windows 10 (upgraded from windows 8.1 (i have the disk for 8.1)
AMD FX-6300 CPU
AMD R270X 2GB GPU
2X 4GB DDR3

How are you seeing your desktop then? The 6300 doesn't have integrated graphics.

It does suggest a dying GPU. Have you updated the drivers?

Well i did disable my gpu so i know its strange.. i tried uninstalling all drivers and downloading the new ones.. but as soon as i was installing my new drivers my screen just went black and thats it... so if i want to see my desktop again i now have to start the pc in safe mode and disable the gpu and restart. Very strange.

- If your card is still under warranty you could send it out for replacement as it's showing instability at regular clocks and within specifications temps, but there are things that you could try :

- First intention but voids warranty: full clean up of your graphic card = fans clean-up and if possible disassembly (voids warranty)- cleansing heat sink -reapplying quality thermal paste, clean up of the motherboard PCI slot, making sure card is well seated in it's PCIeslot (preferably attaching the card while motherboard is laid flat. Card has to be strictly horizontal when mounted on the PCIe slot= no sagging (use GPU holder brace = 3 to 20$ on ebay or just a well placed piece of stereo-form)
- I've been running this R9 290x Asus Matrix Platinum for few years now and I have to maintain a good airflow in the immediate proximity of the card using 2x120 mm fans blowing air horizontally above and underneath the card to avoid it artifacting when gaming even within temperature specifications and at stock clocks = zero issues when paired with a good overall case ventilation.
-If you're not the original owner of the card, check if your card Bios build and signature is the stock one (using GPUZ then comparing version to Techpower-up GPU Bios database).
- Attach the 2x 6pin GPU PCIe power connectors from 2 separate PSU PCIe cables (known issue with some power supplies getting graphic cards artifacting),
- I would suggest clean re-install of drivers from scratch after doing some drivers clean up using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) or AMD driver clean up utility (Safe mode advised)

The only problem i have is that as soon as i enable my graphics card my screen goes black. I cant do anything other than that..

Do you mean when you enable it in windows device manager ?

Yes. Its the same if i install some gpu drivers. To be able to use my pc again i have to start it up in safe mode and disable my gpu again.

Sounds like it's cooked , do you have another pc to test it in? Or another gpu to try in your pc?

Definitely worth the test on another system, and if possible under windows 7

What do you mean by "cooked" ? I will try to put it in a different pc, gues its also time to get an upgrade haha!

Maybe the GPU is on the way out, however a black screen once drivers are installed can be an error in the OS as much as a problem with the card itself.
A good example of this is I sold my old R9 290x to my brother and as soon as we installed the drivers, black screen. We could start it in safe mode and uninstall the drivers and see the display, but every time we installed the drivers, black screen again. As I knew the card had been working just fine, we ended up doing a fresh install of the OS, and the card has worked fine on it's drivers ever since.
