Hope I’m in the right thread. Anyway I built my pc a few years ago. I have a ASUS 970 pro gaming motherboard with a FX8350 black edition CPU. 16 GB of g.skill ripjaws ddr3. I have a EVGA GTX 950 SSC 2gb graphics card. I have a 240gb Kingston ssd for windows and a 2 TB sea gate Barracuda and a 500 GB western digital. It’s seems fine but the other day my uncle bought me a 32 inch 1440p gaming monitor 85hz. And seems like some games need to be lowered settings. I’m wondering if I could get a new graphics card and save money or do I need a whole new rig? I can play all the elder scrolls games on ultra but like the Witcher 3 lags a little

Solution
Try lowering the resolution to 720p. If you get the playable FPS then a gpu upgrade would help. However if you still get poor FPS you are being limited by the cpu.

Before you upgrade the gpu please tell us what make and model psu you have. Although a psu as old as that system is probably needs changing before risking a new gpu on it.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Sadly, I would say yes, it's a good idea to retire that old beast and look into a new one from either Intel or AMD. You can recycle the storage drives and the case but I'd be wary of the PSU in that build.

Is it possible I could just upgrade the graphics card? I might try to wait a year and build a Ryzen 7 PC

Hello,

We will try our best to give a brief guideline regarding upgrading a gaming setup. I see your system is itself answering you what it needs to be done as running newer games will be a tough ask otherwise, you're as fine with older games as long as your system is stable.

I will only keep those storages. Now understanding your system specification, a rough calculation of budget can be done. unless you have anything to ask.

This link will help you to give an idea about how different budget can offer you a gaming setup (excluding the latest release of AMD products), but still offers a good value or we can create a custom list if you have any selective requirements.
