This feller was extremely lucky. If I were to steal a computer, it would be my first instinct to wipe the harddrive completely and re-install a fresh copy of Win.

@xurwin yea but he didn't break the law by accessing the stolen computer remotely. It was his computer all along. If companies accessed your computer to delete movies that would be illegal because they down own the computer.

Heh...

A while back (in anticipation of college dorm life) I set up my computer to FTP an IP report to a webserver every few hours or so, with an IP config dump as well as the external IP.

If anyone decides to steal my computer they're going to get caught real fast if they connect to a network without wiping the HDD first.

[citation][nom]chickenhoagie[/nom]this is hilarious hahaha. This guy is the ****. I want someone to steal my stuff just so I could own them like this guy did[/citation]
keep on dreaming buddy, lol...you can't even spell your name 😉

This article title is quite naive and stupid. Hackers are not bad people where as Crackers are the real nasty ones. Myself is a Linux kernel hacker and also hack numerous PC/Workstation/Server hardwares! Most of the people our there often misuse or rather dubiously use the word Hacker. I feel pity for them.

[citation][nom]killerclick[/nom]How did he know if this guy stole his machine or just bought it from someone? Also why show the pics of the girl? Also, why would a hacker use a Mac? All pretty weak in my opinion.[/citation]

Too bad he was in possession of stolen property. If you buy a stolen car and are caught driving it, you get arrested. Simple.

I'm concerned that this video wasn't edited for TomsHardware profanity standards before posting.

I checked with a lawyer, depends of whether you know (or if a reasonable person would suspect) if the property was stolen or not. There is probably cause to prosecute this guy but I still wouldn't publish his photos or photos of his dating site contacts. The Mac-using hacker was probably pushed around all his life and this little "revenge" was something he's been waiting for a long time so he couldn't resist. Pathetic, really...

[citation][nom]BulkZerker[/nom]As for hackers using macs, its simple. They are lighter, have better screens and generally have the best battery life. That's all a hacker really cares about. If he wants to bootcamp he can, run linux? Sure! Most hardcore it guys own macs purley because you can run the mac os easier than a hackintosh, and running everything else is easy as pie because linux and windows aren't picky about hardware like macs[/citation]

Quoted for truth, and I hate macs (only because I'm a gamer, from an "everything else" standpoint they're perfectly fine machines, just a tad overpriced).

When you're on the go, you want a device that's going to last you the longest and that's the lightest. It's not like executing code requires a beastly laptop. That's what you have a desktop for. Most real IT guys will have machines running multiple O/S's, whether they're Win/Mac/Linux or Mac/Linux, etc., they're definitely at least dual booting.

[citation][nom]stingstang[/nom]See, Jobs? All your damn security didn't stop him from learning everything he wanted to about that kid.[/citation]
I think you just wanted to take a shot at Jobs but you logic or ability to listen is impaired. The guy had root access to his machine so he can see and do everything...no security can stop what you enable your machine to allow.

[citation][nom]aeurix[/nom]The guy who stole his computer is a classic example of someone who applies for unemployment and welfare (as the new .pdf application forms on his desktop were proof). While there was a little bit of revenge and vindication for this hacker, most people never see their computer again...[/citation]

What do you mean "classic example"? So by you statement I can infer that 10% of our country are unscrupulous thieves? Being as 10% of our country is or has drawn unemployment checks. I don't know where you get your facts, but most people on assistance are struggling families trying to make their children's life a little better. Thanks for diminshing the plight of struggling middle class people by associating us with this loser.

To be honest, I'm more concerned about the data in my computer than the hardware itself. Then again if I owned a Mac I'd be concerned about the hardware too lol.

I fail to understand your correlation between Mac and your concern for Mac hardware...??? Lousy anti-Mac attempt maybe?

I wonder what happened to the guy after the cops caught up with him?

Also, isn't cracking into someone's cc info and FB considered an invasion of privacy/theft? Can you just hack into someone's stuff like that if they have your computer?

It seems to me that post of the people talking about hackers not using macs have no idea what's going on. A mac tends to be a solid (albeit overpriced) hardware platform on top of an intuitive and pretty interface that provides a lot of regular working tools (e.g., you can get office, etc)... a lot of annoyances you'll find with linux like package management are lessed to a large degree etc, but the most important aspect is that mac's are unix-like. Out of the box, you can open up a terminal on a Mac and start writing and executing code. You can have a compiler, already have or easily install python perl libpcap etc. It's basically a solid unix-like platform with a lot of extra prettyness, that potentially gives you more programs to analyze data once you've swiped it (e.g., you can get office for macs).

Well this guy was using a Mac Pro. It doesn't have a screen or battery and it's certainly not light
