I am looking at buying a new system I understand that Win XP does not run even recent games like Mech Warrior II. I mainly will run games 75% and run internet 25% should I purchase, Win XP, Win XP & Win 98Se, buy Win XP and install my Win 95 last version in dual boot, Buy Win 98SE and install win XP when they have an upgrade version. I see that Tom uses Win 98 SE for game speed. I also want to know if the performance of Win XP using Win 98SE preferences works as fast as win 98SE? Are there problems having dual boots for Win XP?

That's a mouthful...
but if you only want to buy one, go for Win98SE or WinME. For a dual-boot, go with either of those and WinXP.

Given your stated usage (games 75%, internet 25%) I suggest stick with 98, or ME if you prefer it.

XP is unnecessary, dual O/S's would be a waste of time and resources.

I've upped to XP and installed a number of games like MaxPayne, UT, The Sims, Arcarnum and a number of game demos. All my games worked perfectly and 90% of demos ran perfectly as well. I couldn't get sound in Red Faction demo(lame game anyway) and From Dusk Till Dawn demo had a corrupt menu system (even though the actual gameplay was flawless). I have 98SE on another HD, but I've never needed to go back to it.

I would say XP.

Windows XP is just Windows NT. All the incompatibilites that go with NT (WinNT4.0, Win2k, WinXP) are what you're confronting.

Mechwarrior Mercenaries and Mechwarrior 2 aren't going to run. The code is different. I've gotten Mechwarrior 3 to play under Win2k Sp0 (no service pack; service pack 0), but once I install service pack 2, it no longer works. Tell me on install that I have to have win95+.

WinXP will speed up as the drivers are tweaked. Win2k had the same problem. It's not the kernal, it's the drivers. So, it's a waiting game.

Rich is the nation that has many war heroes. Long since forgotten...

Mechwarrior II is a "recent game?"

You may be able to use XP's Compatibility Wizard to fool the game into thinking its running under Win98. It doesn't work 100% of the time, but its worth a shot.
