do you think 3.5gb vram is enough for 1440p?

ive been reading alot on the current situation with the 970 having 3.5gb of memory and another .5gb being very slow or managed a different way or something like that. do you think that will matter? currently im on a 1080p tv and was wondering if it would be worth it to get a 1440p monitor and either stay single card or sli my 970, i dont plan on doing 4k for quite some time and by then ill have another card.

think the 970 card as it is is still a good buy for the money. at some point gpu and pc are going to need more ram as games get bigger.

Yes, it will do. However you should teak the video/graphics settings for optimal use.

Hi there, here is a question a little bit more detailed and the different answers, but the short story is that as this right moment it will be enough to 1440p and the life expectancyof your card is shorter that someone that will be using the 970 gtx in 1080p.

I cannot guarantee the ammount of time that you will be fine with it but, dont worry about it for at least, the entire year.

thank you, i was just worried since we had a fairly large jump in the amount of vram usage within the past year and im the kind of person that will do as much as he can to get every little bit of extra fps possible.

Here is my take on the 3.5GB 970 vs 4GB 980 issue:

1. There are definitely games out there that runs VRAM right in that region, where 970 stutters where 980 doesn't, as far as I could tell, it does not matter if the game only uses that VRAM as reserve or has actual data on that VRAM, but the number of games that has VRAM usage lying right around that are few.

2. Anything below 3.5GB is fine with 970, it performs as well as can be expected from reviews

3. As you have said, VRAM requirements have jumped up in the past year, and I don't see any reason why it would slow down anytime soon, thus to me, it is unlikely that VRAM requirement is going to slowly crawl its way up, more like explode. Which means that if 970 can't cope now, 980 isn't very far behind. To me it makes more sense to go for a 970 now, save the money for an earlier upgrade if VRAM requirements does explode. It simply doesn't make much sense to spend that much more on a card that may not be much more 'future proof'.

But have in mind that you are going to be fine with 1080p monitor loong time if you are planning going to 1440p your settings will be high with a little bit of AA or ultra with no AA but with FXAA and of course you have to think about ports optimization. Have a good day
