Is DOCSIS 3.1 necessary if speed is less than 1Gbps? I have 600Mbps and thinking of going down to 300. The xFI modem/router isn't as reliable as my Arris SB6182 & Netgear Nighthawk R6700v3.

Looking into getting my own modem again and returning their equipment. Is DOCSIS 3.1 worth it for the speed I am working with?

That is a question you have to ask your ISP. They will have approved modems for each tier of service they offer.

It tends to be a little more complex than just the docsis version. They should have lists of exact models they support.

Key here is the ISP not you will be doing all the software updates. This includes modems you own. Because it would be impossible for them to do every possible modem you mostly see the more popular ones. You for example will almost never see huawei modems in the USA even though they are using the same docsis as any other brand.

To make this even more complex it actually can differ slightly even in the same city. Some for example run both docsis 3 and docsis 3.1 overlapping where others just run say docsis3.1 and use other methods to control the data rates people get. This all depends on the equipment the ISP has installed near you. I suspect in the future they may require docsis 3.1 for all modems even when you buy the minimum plans just to make their network easier.

In the end it is highly like that a arris sb6182 is allowed since it is extremely common but you really need to check. Again this is a software support thing and the ISP likes to keep the list of modem they support to the minimum.
