Does any body really like XP so far...?

Never heard the 1Ghz+ argument before. What about 98 then? That was even worse and was meant for "older" machines. Me? That was complete garbage. I ended up on a machine with Me last week and I swear that OS is possessed. Win2000 is supposedly good, but I never had faith in it on a gamining rig. I got Win2000 before it even came out and yet I never once installed it. Maybe I should have. Nonetheless I'm very pleased with WinXP.

Your setup sounds cool, but maybe you could try XP so that you can avoid all the swapping. Even if it's just to avoid one single crash I still think it's worth it. In my experience Win98se was a good OS, but XP is great. Not perfect, but great.

Someone who can get 98se for free can most likely get WinXP for free as well :)

I agree with you, however from my experience(I do a lot of video editing and photo editing)many of the problems and crashes disappeared when I was running at around 1ghz and at least 256mb of ram. Sure XP runs great, I'm not arguing that fact, I'm simply stating that Win98SE with a lot of power behind it and with the right combination of hardware can run exceptionally smooth and reliable.

""I'm running WinMe on my AMD K6-2 450MHz machine also without problems.""

Did you try to put XP on that machine? If not, try and see what kind of "faster" machine you will have, gg.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Duh, I'm not going to be running Windows XP on that machine. I'm running WinXP on my main machine: 1.33GHz Athlon 256MB RAM (upgrading to 512MB), and Radeon 8500.

I like XP!

1) Fast program loading and context switches (maybe it's just my new super fast machine).
2) Compatibility mode (It fixed the stability problem with Battlezone 1 using the Win95 compatibility mode).
3) Easy to set up.
4) Like the new user interface.
5) Stable.

I too had that chipset on a DFI AK76SN and it that chipset also ran like [-peep-] with 98SE. I was getting registry errors steady! It was so bad I returned the board and got a Via KT266 chipset. The hardware is the same(Athlon XP1600+ and 512 DDR ram) and 98 runs smooth now. Therefore, like I said with the right hardware it can be stable. I'm not arguing that its the best OS but it just needs to be "rubbed" the right way and it can be quite a performer especially in gaming. Personally, I don't like that chipset that you have because I had problems in W2k and XP with it so I changed the board and problem solved. Don't think for one minute that all these computers coming with XP pre installed have not been intensly tested for compatability. Guys like you and I who build our own have to work out those issues ourselves and usually when you finally get it right you stick with it. I have XP and I ran it for a couple of weeks. Yes it runs fantastic, however for me having a stable Win98 on one drive and a trusty W2K on the other, I felt that my needs were met and I did not feel like switching to XP because it had nothing to offer me that I did not already have. Good luck with that chipset.

I'm still on Delphi 3, my damn department won't get a decent licensing arrangment. However I haven't noticed vast amounts of difference to really convince me to fork out.

Back to Xp... Is it true that XP makes a major fuss should you want to change your motherboard (yes I'm finaly buying a P4S333) you have to re-activate it or something (wouldn't that be very awkward) .

Charlie

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

No, you don't, I believe you can make up to 5 changes to your hardware before you have to reactivate it.

And sorry about that strange post that may have been up for an hour or so, my brother thinks he's funny.

Agh, I paid good money for WinXP home! Why does Flamethrower get all the luck? A Quadro DCC for $80? WinXP Corporate? You're lucky Flamethrower! Too lucky........hehe
