I am curious to know if display resolution matters in minecraft, I would assume it doesn't really affect graphics becuase... well it's minecraft.

Yes, it will affect performance, the higher resolution, means that the GPU has to display high res textures. Affecting performance overall. with that being said it is still minecraft so you should not get a big performance hit

if you can see more on the screen, even in Minecraft, it is generally a good think. It will give you wider view of the world.

The same can be said for Terraria, a 2D side scrolling sandbox. It being in a higher resolution would benefit the game because you can see more of it.

I know that when I played Minecraft around 2 years ago on a 20" monitor, Large GUI and Auto GUI were the same thing. Then I upgraded to a monitor that had 1920x1080 on it, and Large and Auto GUI had a significant difference. I know that playing on a 2560x1440 Resolution, the GUI starts getting smaller than what it had before. You will be able to see more of the screen by just a fraction if you're playing on Normal FOV. But if you up your FOV to something like Quake Pro [not recommended] Then you will be able to see a lot more of the screen than you could not playing in 1920x1080 or 2560x1440. I don't think that resolution would affect the performance, as long as you're able to run it.

Depends on the mods and your pc. My daughter plays on a i5-3570k and 660ti at 1080p with any mods she cares to use. Looks exactly the same ony i7-3770K and 970 dual 1080p. Minecraft mods tend to be highly cpu bound, very little to the gpu, so while vanilla minecraft really sees very little difference at any resolution, not having a sufficiently powerful cpu can and will change that at higher resolutions with more than a few mods.
