Hello everyone,

Laptop model: Lenovo IdeaPad S510p

I have been experiencing random fps drops in games for about 4 months. After playing for half an hour yesterday, the CPU temperature was 79C. When I disassembled the laptop, I noticed that one of the fan's cables was eroded, so I connected the worn part and stuck it to the plastic cover of the fan with electrical tape.

Now the fan is working and after half an hour of gaming the CPU temperature is only 65C. instead of 79C.

My question is, does soldering the cable affect the fan performance and cause problems in the long run or should I just replace the fan? Additionally, I haven't changed the thermal paste since I bought the laptop about 8 years ago. Do you think there is a need to change it?

Thanks in advance.

Two thoughts from my viewpoint:

1) Cable soldering: Unless you have some soldering skills (and even if you do) I would leave well-enough alone.

2) CPU thermal paste: Falls into the "if it ain't broke then don't fix it" category.

The overall advantage is that you do not need to take any actions that are, in both cases, likely to be risky. You have the current advantage of knowing about potential problems and can watch accordingly.

And, as you should be doing anyway, ensure that all important laptop data is being backed up at least 2 x to locations away from the laptop. Verify that the backups are recoverable and readable.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll replace the fan with a new one and also replace the thermal paste in the process.
