Hey everyone, I was wondering if the radeon 64 retail has a built in temperature monitor. My voodoo3 1000 doesn't and i was just kinda curious.

No would be the answer. Radeons run rather cool unless you overclock them. The orginal HSF for the GPU was cosmetic more then funtion. The newer Radeons have a revised HSF which is bigger and more functional allowing for much better overclocking. Plus the newer Radeon 64s are SE versions that come at 200mhz/200mhz core/mem speeds. Some of these SE versions are being overclocked to greater then 250mhz with 3dMark2001 default benchmark scores in the high 4000 range as in 4700. Here is a quick thread showing off the potential of these new SE verson Radeons in 3dMark2001:

The newer Radeon cores indicate as SE's on SiSoft Saundra. They also overclock way over 250mhz. Looks like ATI went ahead with the core modification and manufacutring of the revised core but decided not to officially propagate another Radeon version which would compete with the Radeon 2. That is my best estimate of what happen.

This setup is an outstanding value for the money, these scores are better then most GF2 Ultra scores overclocked. We are talking about a card with 64meg DDR ram, VIVO for $150 that outperforms the Ultras in DX8 stuff. Right now I think those are the best cards for the money, better then even the LE. Some people are overclocking these SEs to 280mhz without problems, what is holding them back is the 5ns ram. Since now many more manufacturers will be producing Radeons maybe we will see a very fast 3.8ns mem Radeon going at 275mhz/550mhz.

jesus. ati should have done that a long time ago, they would have had a huge market share by now with cards out like that in mass. Purhaps it is time for me to reconsider buying the pro I was going to get.

Just remember the bulk of the sells and money comes from the sub $200 range. So a higher performing Radeon in the long run wouldn't really make that much of a difference. Plus releasing a Radeon SE a couple of months before the Radeon 2 I think would have been a bad decision. They might of if the Radeon 2 was going to be delayed excessively. So they instead are producing a faster Radeon quietly and underclocking the core. Now other manufacturers will be able to put the memory that should be with these speedy cores. I just hope they do. 5ns memory on these babies are maxing out around 230-240mhz, while the core can go up around 280-290.
