Does turning down my GPU temperature limit affect game performance?

When I play Overwatch on max settings with my RX 480 Black Edition, the temperature goes to 90'C. If I use MSI Afterburner to turn down the temperature limit to 80'C or even 70'C, will that affect the game performance?

If I turn down the temperature limit but increase the power limit to the max 50%, will that balance it out?

Solution

"If I use MSI Afterburner to turn down the temperature limit to 80'C or even 70'C, will that affect the game performance?"
Yes, it will slow down performance to keep temps lower.

"If I turn down the temperature limit but increase the power limit to the max 50%, will that balance it out?"
No, You can allow it to use more power but more power often means more heat.

Instead of those options, put another fan...

The more power the card consumes the more heat you have to dissipate. If your card is running hot already, do not overclock it. Remove the side panel of your case, let the card´s fans get cool air, and your RX480 should run as intended.

Instead of those options, put another fan in your computer case blowing on/at the video card.
OR you could get a liquid cooling solution for your video card.

But before paying for anything, you can simply take the side panel off in order to see what better airflow does ;)

Agreed, also if you have a house fan you can use that to blow some air into your case.
