Don't know if ram is defective

Hello,

My computer started freezing up to the point of where I cannot do anything about it and randomly restarting at random points. I came to a conclusion that its most likely that my ram is defective even though it worked fine for the first month. After swapping my new ram with my old RAM i found out that my computer started to work fine. The problem is that when i placed my new ram back and ran the memtest86 it did not give me any errors, but my computer would still freeze. Is it possible that memtest could be wrong? or should i just go to repair shop and let them locate the problem?

RAM: G.Skill RipJaws X 8GB 1866Mhz

Thanks,

How long/what memtests did you run?

Your memory may have been fine on a limited test run, but could show errors on a longer/more indepth set of tests.

Could also be if your "bad" ram is 8GB and your "good" stuff is 4GB - the issue is related to memory addressing/swap files/something with the OS and doesn't occur when you only have the 4GB installed.

Was the "good" ram in one set of slots while the "bad" was in another? Could be that one of your ram ports on the motherboard is bad and wasn't used when testing the "good" ram.

Could also be related to timings. if the "bad" ram is being overclocked (or was sold at a higher rating than it can handle) then it could be resolved by lowering the ram timings.

I ran the memtest for about 3.5 hours. It completed 4 of 4 passes with no errors. When i swapped the ram, i placed everything in the same dims.

Though the freezes occur at random points sometimes they occur more than 4 times a day or 0 times a day so it could have been that when i placed the 4GB of ram it was just the matter of luck that it didn't freeze at that time because i only tested for about a day, so there is chance it might be not ram at all. I read online about the symptoms that my PC has and a lot of people say that its most likely the memory so I am not sure what to do at this point.

I also re-installed windows 8.1 thinking that might be the problem but it wasn't.

The ram was also sold and set to run at 1866 MHz but bios indicates that it runs at 1600Mhz right now.

Do you have the latest BIOS? If so try enabling XMP and select profile 1 - if problems continue raise the DRAM voltage + 0.05 and try if problems persist - then would look at the other drivers and possibly OS (can check OS by going to Command Prompt as Administrator and run the command SFC /SCANNOW

I tried enabling X.M.P profile 1 and when I save the configuration it gives me "Boot Failure detected" in the description it says "The system has experienced a boot failure possibly due to incorrect configuration. Previous Setting in BIOS may not be compatible. with current hardware state"

Current CPU speed" 3800.76MHZ
Current BCLK: 100.2MHZ
Current memory speed: 1600.33MHZ

If I disable X.M.P it boots fine.

Ok so I went into bios and gave the CPU a 20% performance boost which should bring it to 4.3 Ghz. The system booted up with xmp profile 1 with no problem. This is a bit weird because in CPU-ID it still shows that the CPU is at 3.4 Ghz when in bios i gave it a performance boost what could this mean? Sorry I am an overclocking nub.

It keeps on changing, all the numbers it gives me= x12 (8-34), x8 (8-34), x21 (8-34), x34 (8-34)
